Subject: apcupsd FATAL ERROR in linux-usb.c at line 686
Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 01:43:52 +0000	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <40735CD8.3050804@vzavenue.net> (raw)

Hi, I just compiled kernel 2.6.5 and have problems starting apcupsd.

setup:
Pentium 4 at 2.4GHz,
Gentoo
apcupsd 3.10.10
udev 024-r1 (gentoo version)
kernel 2.6.5
kernel headers 2.6.4
nptl

Seen during boot:
===================================
  * Starting APC UPS daemon...
apcupsd FATAL ERROR in linux-usb.c at line 686
Cannot open UPS device:                                        [OK]
===================================

/var/log/apcupsd.events doesn't say anything more but "apcupsd error
shutdown completed¨.

It used to work with 2.6.4 in the same setup, with udev-021 (going out
on a limb here, I think it was 021, but I'm not 100% sure), but it fails
  to start with 2.6.4 now, as well.

The only change I had to make was that the /dev node is now at
/dev/usb/hiddev0 instead of /dev/usb/hid/hiddev0.

It still starts with 2.6.4-rc1 and devfs. I don't have time at the
moment to try and find out if devfs and 2.6.5 would work or if the nptl
may be at fault here (which I don't believe, since 2.6.4/udev/nptl did
work, but stopped working with udev-024-r1), let alone to find out what
"-r1" means or to try 'vanilla' udev-024. But should anyone on either
list have more questions, feel free to ask!

While I'm on the linux-hotplug-devel list, I'm not on the apcupsd-users
list. If you read this from here and would like a reply, you'll probably
want to copy me directly.

Thanks:)
Vincent
