This message has nothing to do with ppp, rather you need to upgrade your
version of udev (look at the kernel Documentation/Changes file for the
minimum version of udev that the 2.6.10 kernel will support.

udev and the distribution often have a very deep integration,
and trying to upgrade udev only might kill your whole system.
so if that is possible I suggest to upgrade the whole distribution.
