I plan on doing this soon, but I don't have time time to fool around
with another external module right now. I'll post back when I get to
it, though.

Props! The script/rule you sent, while not working straight away, did
lead me in the right direction.
Boils down to a chicken/egg poaching: the udev rule triggers the
script _before_ /lib/udev/firmware.sh actually loads the
/lib/firmware/ipw3945.ucode.
So, hack /lib/firmware/ipw3945.ucode to trigger the /sbin/ipw3945d.sh
script after the firmware load!
I had tried a WAIT_FOR_SYSFS='/sys/bus/pci/drivers/ipw3945/bin"
argument in the rule, but that bought squat.
Yea, verily, there was a /sys/class/net/eth2, and smith retired for a
private moment.
