I'm sorry you feel this way, is there any specific problems you are
having with it that we can help you out with?   Any specific version of
udev and the kernel that is causing you problems?

And here's a list of distros that I know ship with udev:
	RHEL 4
	Fedora Core (3, 4, 5)
	SLES 9
	SuSE 10.0
	SuSE 10.1 betas
	SLES 10 betas
	SLED 10 betas
	Mandrake/Mandriva
	Slackware
	Debian
	Gentoo
	CentOS 4
	Linux from Scratch
And I'm sure the other people can provide more examples of distros that
I'm not aware of at the moment.

Also note that _every_ one of the above distros picked up udev on their
own as it solves problems that they had with a static /dev.  None of the
udev developers asked them to do it.

There were almost no problems with relation to udev when arch movedfrom devfs almost a year ago (or whatever, looking up the exact datewon't solve anything).  The only hurdles encountered are when udevreleases make breaking changes (i.e. ordering of net devices in recentversions).
Archlinux currently runs the latest udev version, and will continueto.  The udev package is typically released 1-2 days after a new udevrelease.

I feel that Documentation/early-userspace could use a review.
While the material there is certainly interesting, it doesn't seem
sufficient for a reasonably savvy, yet still aspiring, kernel
developer to craft a bootable kernel.

In particular, getting udev integrated into an initramfs seems
under-documented.

Understood, TMTOWTDI, and it's a distro issue, and it's userspace, not
kernel, etc.

Nevertheless, a vanilla example with the minimal guts to support a
boot would be an improvement.

OTOH, masochistic twit that I am, I'm rather enjoying the gum-shoe
aspects of figuring out WTF to get 'er done.
