cable select

in my experience cable select can cause problems recognizing drives -
especially if some of the drives are older than others or spin up slower.
I had a lot of problems with my desktop around 9 months ago (when it
turned out that the powersupply was also starting to fail) which resolved
when I made sure the main pair of ide drives did NOT use cable select.

also when you change hardware (ie drives) in an older system you often do
need to go into the bios at early boot and make sure all the newly
installed drives are detected.

you said the old cd was on a scsi bus - where all 4 of the ide slots being
used before you pulled the old scsi cd?

although scsi is an older technology it is my understanding that
it is still very good except for the problems of making sure that the scsi
devices are terminated in compatible manner.

do you have other scsi devices in this computer? if not you may want
to remove the scsi card to avoid termination craziness.
