Hi!

I have a small distribution based on vanilla kernel, which is using
devfs (checking the option on kernel config) and I want to change to udev.
But I'm having some problems to make it successful.
When I disable the devfs support in the kernel, the startup hangs in the
following line, after mounting the root (ext3 filesystem):

"Warning: unable to open an initial console"

What could it be?
What can I do to make udev work in my distro?

Thanks.

Rui Carvalho

Did you read the HOWTO-udev_for_dev file that's in the udev tarball? It
contains a lot of hints about how to accomplish this.

Good luck,

[taken from Gentoo boot help]
To rectify this situation, please do the following:
mkdir /mnt/fixit
mount --bind / /mnt/fixit
cp -a /dev/* /mnt/fixit/dev/
umount /mnt/fixit
rmdir /mnt/fixit
-mike

The medium you boot from probably has an empty /dev directory. You should at
least have a /dev/console node. A /dev/null node usually comes in handy
too. If you're interrested in building a system from scratch you may want
to look at LFS (Linux From Scratch: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/).
Their testing branch uses udev for device creation. You may find valuable
information over there. Keep in mind that it might contain LFS specific
information.
