Nodes briefly disappear on close?

So I've run into the following problem:

Now I'm sure I'm not the first to notice this.  But between the FAQ and the
mailing list, I couldn't find a solution.  I'm running Gentoo, udev 087, kernel
2.6.15.

It is probably important to mention that /dev/hda1 is actually on a compact
flash, which may be slow to return from whatever udev is doing to it to find out
the partition info?

The reason this is a problem:  I can't format said device.  An strace of tools
such as mkfs.msdos show that it opens, then closes the partition, then tries to
immediately open again, leading to an error that the device is not accessible.

Any ideas how to get around this?

IDE is totally broken for removable devices. Upgrade your kernel to get
this:

Or let udev ignore the "remove" events, so the IDE device nodes will never go away.

Excellent.  Upgraded to 2.6.17, and after muddling through the latest unionfs
build to get my systems going, this problem is gone.  Thanks!
