The easiest way would be to include a file in the kernel that contains the 
version number of one compiler that is able to compile the kernel. This 
compiler is then used to compile the kernel.

If the driver does not compile and the package containing the driver states 
that the driver has not been tested with the kernel version it can just abort 
and tell the user that the driver has not been ported the newer version yet. 
This is not worse than the current situation for both user and developer.

I wonder for how long it is possible to keep all existing drivers in the 
kernel source though.
