Curious, it most certainly worked for a mouse I tested it against.
Was that a combined mouse/joystick ... or a real mouse? Did you
install both modutils 2.4.1 and Keith's patch? And then rebuild
and reinstall your kernel, and reinstall all the kernel modules?
Rule of thumb for this version: if a HID device doesn't hotplug,
it's going to need an entry in /etc/hotplug/usb.handmap ... that
will be true until someone starts to teach the "input" subsystem
how to hotplug. (The previous version needed that for usb-storage
devices too ... but the ABI change made it easier for that driver
to hotplug, so usb-storage should mostly hotplug.)
I've not looked at it, but one way to start "input" hotplugging might
be to find out where "hid.c" sees devices' HID descriptors, and issue
call_usermodehelper() with information describing the device type.
An /etc/hotplug/input.agent script should be able to figure out
whether it's a mouse, keyboard, joystick, UPS, tablet, etc and
modprobe accordingly.

Where do I get an up-to-date usbmodules? I've never had
such a utility and don't find it in the hotplug tar file
you posted.
Thanks!

After a bit of hunting around, I found that usbmodules
comes from usbutils. I went to the usbutils home page:
http://libusb.sourceforge.net/
But, the newest version of the package posted there is:
usbutils-0.7.tar.gz 03-Nov-2000 17:51
I doubt this is what I need for testing.
Pointers to the right stuff?
Miles

The only CVS tree I can find referenced in any way from
the homepage that mentioned usbutils is for libusb.
I downloaded the CVS version and built libusb, but I
see no sign of usbutils or usbmodules. Do I just need
the CVS version of libusb and the latest released version
of usbutils?
Thanks,
Miles

Here's the command I used to download the libusb CVS source.
When I downloaded a released tarfile of usbutils, I found
that libusb seems to be contained within usbutils, but I
see no CVS module for usbutils. Hmm. Rats.
Here's what I tried:
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.libusb.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/libusb
co libusb

Thanks Norbert. I've got it now.
