I sent Alan the 2.4.0-hotplug patch. He rejected it, claiming that the
usb developers did not need it. Ask Alan Cox, I have given up.

David B.,
Can you please send us a reality check?
What exactly do we need in a test kernel?
We definitely need Matthew Dharm's USB Storage
patch that makes the storage drivers take
advantage of the new information in the 2.4.0
series kernel.
I thought patches were still funnelling through
Johannes Erdfelt. Isn't that the case?

We need Matt's patch and Keith's hotplug patch;
paired with modutils 2.4.1 and with updated
usermode hotplug scripts.

I just noticed an important oversight in your
current hotplug README. It doesn't state that
hotplug.functions needs to be copied to /sbin
and made executable just like /sbin/hotplug does.
Because I finally noticed this, I now have a
working 2.4.0 hotplug environment.
I think it would be great to update the README.
Cheers,
Miles

One more thing. I notice that the requirement for
the 2.4.1 modutils is added to Documentation/Changes
by Kieth's patch, but I since there is now a
dependency on the latest hotplug package, I think
it is time to add linux-hotplug documentation to
Changes.
Lastly, Documentation/usb/hotplug.txt should be
updated to include instructions on where to get
the latest hotplug script and specific information
on installing this latest version of the scripts.
Cheerio,
Miles

OK, I have 2.4.1pre3 (compiled on one machine, but not the hotplug test
laptop machine), modutils 2.4.1 and the CVS hotplug from
http://www.linux-usb.org
Is the CVS OK with 2.4.1 pre3, or are there additional patches (Keith's
and Matt's patches)?
I noted that the hotplug/README states:
For more information about Linux hotplugging:
http://linux-hotplug.sourceforge.org/
That should be .net, rather than .org
It lacks a bit of detail too :)
I am planning to do the install on my laptop at the USB BOF for
linux.conf.au, where I won't have a lot of time/tools/privacy to sort
out my problems, so I could use some tips here...
Brad

Yes, you need those patches.
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/modutils/patch-2.4.0-hotplug.bz2
(this is from memory, but you get the idea).
Use Matt's patch that he sent today.
Remember to copy both hotplug and hotplug.functions to
/sbin and run "chmod a+x" on them. As the hotplug README
says, also copy "*.agent" to /etc/hotplug.
I think that's it.
Good luck!
Miles

Because it doesn't. Extract the whole package
to /etc/hotplug, and only move "hotplug" to /sbin.
I suspect I'll provide an RPM to avoid all such
problems. It'd be great if someone would also
volunteer to put together "apt" support (please
synch with me on the release points).

Well, any hotplug package could work. I'd rather
hold off just a bit on this one, until everything
works again.

I'll gladly update this and DOcumentation/Configure.help
to point to the linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net website,
after it's available there.

Actually, do what the README says and put everything
into /etc/hotplug ... partial installs won't work well!
FYI I just put some info up on
http://linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net/
which is at least a start. Who's interested in helping
make sure the website has the information that's needed?

Thanks for starting this. I was going to try to throw up a initial page
today, but this is much nicer than I was going to do.
I'm willing to work on this too, and added info on the mailing list to
the bottom of the page.
thanks,
