No.  I'm using APM.  I'll try turning off Power Management,
altogether, if you think it might make a difference.

No.  I didn't get that socket time out, but hotplug still doesn't
work at all.

Do you think cardmgr is getting in the way?  I could try renaming it so 
it isn't invoked.
