You might want to look at the logging used in the configuration
scripts in the latest PCMCIA package. There are two levels of
verbosity; in the more verbose mode, all "important" commands get
recorded in the system log, and in the less verbose mode, any
important command that fails gets reported, along with its output.
It is a pain to debug hot plug script actions when no information is
logged.
