You're right, it _can_ be done by synthesizing hotpluf
events from the initscripts. In fact, that's how it
must be done.
It simply seems nicer to have just one way of doing things, IMO.
But you still will need to special-case things which are
required to get a successful boot. I confess I haven't
thought about this too hard.
