It does not seem difficult to do...
Is the problem that bash1 do not have bit operators?
If so, can you tell me (I have not bash1) if in bash1 a operation like
echo ${BASH_VERSINFO[0]}
is correct?

Problem is nobody donating the work to write/debug/integrate/retest.
Bit operations aren't the most widely available functionality, either.

I just tried this on an RH 6.2 system and got "bad substitution".
"bash -version" says 1.14.7(1) ... surely sources to bash1 are
widely available!
