What exactly is the relationship of usbutils to the current
hotplug release? Is it really essential for hotplugging to work?
I ask because I have a linuxppc machine running Linux 2.4.4pre1
which won't load the usb print module upon sensing my Epson 740i
(attached via usb) unless I have usbutils installed? I ask because
redhat's version of hotplug doesn't seem to work at all in this
regard. However they also don't have usbutils as part of rawhide
either. Thanks in advance for any clarifications.
                    Jack

The usbutils patch (to get the "usbmodules" command)
should make a difference in some cases ... it's used to
synthesize boot-time ("cold-plugging" :) events when
needed, and to make sure that USB devices with multiple
interfaces get them all configured. If the 740i looks like
other Epson printers I've seen, it's not the latter case.

So no, it's not intended to be essential, except for those
two cases, on current kernels.

I suspect the problem is actually something else; if
RedHat is incorporating only some of the hotplug
scripts, it's very possible they didn't get something
important. I'll follow up on the other thread ... :)
