I have been trying udev 177.
My system is basically a linux from scratch like system.
Any thoughts?

Udev seems to mostly work properly however the firmware for the Echo
Gina3g PCI card will not load.
The card firmware loaded properly with older udev versions and also
works with Debian unstable on another drive.
The "timeout" is not a directory. It is a textfile the contents of which
is "60"
I have tried several recent kernels and the results are the same each time.

My guess it's that this is another driver that calls
request_firmware() in the module_init() path, which is a kernel bug
that needs to be fixed. No driver must depend on calling out to
userspace while linking the module into the kernel.
Udev 176+ enforces strict event order. Here is an explanation in
detail for some netdev drivers which cause problems now:

After updating to udev-177 + systemd38 I'm hitting a
permissions problem with running the thinkfan program. From
syslog:

Thinkfan is supposed to be started via a thinkfan.service file
in /etc/systemd/system, which reads as follows:

Description=Thinkfan fan controller
[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/thinkfan -q -n -z
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
This worked fine before the udev/systemd update. Any
suggestions on what I need to adjust? Thanks.

A little more information on this: to control the Thinkpad fan
speed, the thinkpad_acpi module must be loaded with the
option fan_control=1. I have a line that arranges that in
/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf. Apparently this is not
respected by kmod. I tried the experiment of
modprobe -r thinkpad_acpi
modprobe thinkpad_acpi
(using module-init-tools, that is) and now thinkfan works again.
So my next question is, how to ensure that kmod picks up on
the option. I guess I ought to be able to find that myself.

$ echo 'level 2' > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan
does it's thing here, which should indicate, that the option is read
from the conf file.

I think I have it now: unlike module-init-tools, kmod looks in
/usr/etc rather than /etc by default (i.e. unless you
explicitly set sysconfdir).

Yeah, we need it in kmod, like in other autofoo tools. For kmod 4, I
added the common configuration options as the output of autogen.sh:

from dmesg on boot-up:
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: request for firmware file \
'iwlwifi-6000g2a-5.ucode' failed.
The file in question is in /lib/firmware, which is the
firmware-path set for udev.
It seems, though, that the error message is somehow spurious,
since I also see this (shortly after the above):
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: loaded firmware version 17.168.5.3 build
42301
and version 17.168.5.3 corresponds to iwlwifi-6000g2a-5. So
just a cosmetic problem?

You see the same when you rmmod/modprobe the module?
Please enable timestamps in printk, and provide the entire output of
dmesg, so we can see in which context of the bootup this happens.

After starting udev on the /dev which is devtmpfs the udev does not
'take over' already created nodes unless I add in the udev's init script
'udevadm trigger --typeÞvices --action=change'
right after
'udevadm trigger --typeÞvices --actiond'
If there is no action=change, the /dev device mapper nodes looks like

The /dev/mapper/* become symlinks to /dev/dm-* (following udev rules).
The question is: in such scenario, where udev use already-created /dev
(whatever it is devtmpfs or maybe mdev-created), should we add the
action=change to the init script? If no, then what should we do to
udevize /dev?
Distro gentoo, udev-171, I have such issue on every box I use.

Hmm, in fact yes. If I rmmod then modprobe iwlwifi using the
module-init-tools binaries I now see the same pattern of a
failure message immediately followed by a report that the
firmware is loaded. The funny thing is that I wasn't seeing
the failure message (using the same 3.2.1 kernel) before
updating udev 175 -> 177.

Hmm, I don't see that here. The log does not show anything obvious.
You are sure, you don't have the old firmware loader installed along
with the new udev, right? There is no /lib/udev/rules.d/50-firmware*
file, right?

Urgh, wrong. My old 50-firmware.rules file escaped my notice.
I've now deleted it. While on that subject, I take it that the
files pci-db and usb-db in /lib/udev are not wanted any more?

They don't hurt, they should be never called again by the current
udev. They run only a single time per device. All the IMPORT= stuff is
taken over transparently by the built-ins.
I'm not sure if the old firware rule can cause this problem, but it is

Thanks. I haven't tried rebooting yet, but just doing rmmod
iwlwifi ; modprobe iwlwifi I'm no longer seeing the
firmware-loading failure message.

Sorry to be a pest, but I have one more issue with the
systemd-38 update (I'm actually using systemd from git
e6520a0fcebb4d5e07f4c81a51382501b0beb22f to get the update to
make ACLs optional).
I'm running rsyslog; I have an rsyslog.service file in
/lib/systemd/system which reads as follows:

Description=System Logging Service
[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/rsyslogd -n -c6
Sockets=syslog.socket
StandardOutput=null
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
</service>
Logging apparently works OK (/var/log/messages contains what
you'd expect), but I'm seeing this from dmesg on booting:
systemd[1]: Socket service syslog.service not loaded,
refusing.
On looking into the syslog.socket file installed by current
systemd, I noticed a recommendation to make a symlink
named syslog.service, pointing to rsyslog.service, in
/lib/systemd/system.
I made the symlink, and the boot-up error disappeared. But it
had a nasty side-effect: now systemctl poweroff and systemctl
reboot stopped working. These commands put the machine into a
zombie-like state (blank screen with a blinking cursor at the
top left); it was necessary to stop the machine with the power
button. It took me a while to figure out what was responsible
for this behavior, but when I deleted the syslog.service
symlink, poweroff and reboot started working again -- though
of course the boot-error message is back.

Bugfix for the firmware loading behavior with kernel modules which
try to load firmware in the module_init() path. The blocked event
runs into a timout now, which should allow the firmware to be loaded.
Bugfix for a wrong DEVNAME= export, which breaks at least the udev-acl
tool.
Bugfix for missing ID_ properties for GPT partitions.
The RUN+="socket:.." option is deprecated and should not be used. A warning
during rules parsing is printed now. Services which listen to udev events,
need to subscribe to the netlink messages with libudev and not let udev block
in the rules execution until the message is delivered.

Hi,
I am finding it difficult to find the exact options required for
"udevadm info" command, in order to get the list of Ethernet network
interfaces on an LSB-compliant Linux system.
I am looking for something which can give output similar to the one of
the following command:
lshal | grep "net.interface"
Sorry about asking a basic question. I am new to udev and somehow I
could not make out the usage from the output of "udevadm info --help".
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Udev has intentionally no idea about device classes or specific
subsystems; hence there is no command to ask for anything like that.
Udev does not try to play any abstraction games like HAL did, and
there is absolutely no plan to do that, or to tell udev what Ethernet
or any other specialized device type is. There are just devices, and
devices have a subsystem a name, and a few properties, not much more.
Udev is a mostly generic key/value device database and an interface to
query kernel devices. It's the building block for stuff like udisks,
PulseAudio, NetworkManager, systemd, ... You need to talk to these
individual services to get the subsystem/domain-specific information.
'udevadm info' is based on libudev, you need to write your own tool
using libudev if you have special requirements:
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/libudev/
and when:
grep . /sys/class/net/*/type
is not enough for what you look for.

Hi all,
When running the following command...
for NIC in /sys/class/net/* ; do
INTERFACE=${NIC##*/} udevadm test --actiond $NIC
done
... I see the following output:
run_command: calling: test
adm_test: version 178
builtin_kmod_init: load module index
index_mm_open: No such file or directory
Now, the command actually runs successfully, and the persistent rules
file is correctly generated, but I'm left scratching my head as to what
file/directory is trying and failing to be read.
I've tried building both udev-178 and kmod-4 with '--enable-debug' but
still don't get any additional output. What am I missing?
