Andre-

If you're running IA32 apps and have no intention to run IA64
ones then the Pentium III should run significantly faster than the
Itanium.  (This is assuming equivalent disks, equivalent size and
speed of memory.)

If you every intend to run apps that require 64-bit addressing then
things change and Itanium is a better choice.
