Hi!
On ubuntu bug tracker, there's some bug reports about DVD drives that don't respond anymore.
The affected drives are:
PLEXTOR DVDR PX-740A
BENQ DVD DD DW1620
PHILIPS DVDR14P
SS-SAMSUNG SCR-3232
Matsushita SR-8584-B
(for now)
the error message is :
hda: status error: error=0x00 { }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
hda: drive not ready for command
hda: status error: status 0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179336
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/182996
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/181561
I bisect to find out where the bug was and I found that this commit is:
b140b99c413ce410197cfcd4014e757cd745226a is first bad commit
commit b140b99c413ce410197cfcd4014e757cd745226a
Author: Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz <bzolnier@gmail.com>
Date: Sat Oct 13 17:47:51 2007 +0200
ide: change master/slave IDENTIFY order
Need to probe slave device first to make it release PDIAG-
(this is required for correct device side cable detection).
Based on libata commit f31f0cc2f0b7527072d94d02da332d9bb8d7d94c.
Thanks to Craig for testing this patch.

Have you tried a more recent kernel? Your bisection interval is .23 and .24-rc1,
and a lot of code went into ide after that. However, you should try to
avoid 2.6.24
since ide-cd was broken there. I'd go with 2.6.25-rc5, for example.

I did not tried it personnaly, but at least 2 persons on the ubuntu
bug tracker did.
The bug is still there.

Ok, I will test that this evening and open a bug entry.

Could we get full dmesg for this particular system/problem?
Please also;
- test 2.6.25-rc5 on _your_ system
- verify that configuration of hda and hdb devices is correct
(master/slave settings)

There is far too much information there (different error messages,
different host drivers, some systems are using libata...) - please
open a new bug entry at http://bugzilla.kernel.org so we can start
"clean" and fully concentrate on fixing this bug.
PS Thanks for bisecting it.
