Hi,
I've just put together a system based on a Supermicro X10SDV-F
motherboard, which comes with an Intel C220 SATA controller. I've
got two Intel DC s3610 SSDs plugged into this, and have
intermittently been seeing the following ATA errors:
Jul 23 17:14:41 snaps kernel: [68044.504092] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x3000000 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen

Jul 23 17:14:42 snaps kernel: [68044.825153] ata2: EH complete
This would happen once every couple of days, not seemingly related
to any particular level of IO load.
Initially this was restricted to ata2, and after the SSDs were
swapped around the problem then followed the drive to ata1, so some
time was wasted asking Intel if this was a faulty drive. However
while that was taking place similar errors started to happen with
ata2 again, so in fact both drives are affected and the possibility
of it being a pair of faulty drives now seems unlikely.
This machine spent the first few weeks of its life with different
SSDs in it (Crucial M5s) without problem so that suggests to me that
the cabling etc is all okay too.
I then disabled NCQ. After first booting with kernel command line
libata.force=noncq yet still observing what looked to be NCQ still
enabled in dmesg and /sys/block/sd?/device/queue_depth, I also wrote
1 to /sys/block/sd?/device/queue_depth.
It's now been 5 days and the problem hasn't manifested itself again.
So, should I be reporting this as a bug in the kernel bugzilla and
if so, would that be against the ahci driver?
Distribution is Debian 8.1 so that comes with kernel package
3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u2. I also tried kernel 4.0.8-2 from Debian
testing with no improvement. I did not try an upstream kernel yet.

If you'd like to try and collect a few more data points:
Is there any useful info from smartctl -x ? e.g. reset counters or
other logged errors - either drive internal errors or cabling/link
related "Sata Phy Event Counters" etc.?
Is attempting to ready SMART info status (e.g. through some daemon e.g.
munin hddtemp etc.) actually triggering these errors? FWIW smartctl -x
seemed to elicit a reset on an Intel S3510 for me about 5 minutes ago.
Do the drives work any more reliably on a good PCIe card (such as an
asmedia ASM1061 controller, or Sil3132 = both < $15 assuming you are
able to add one) or do you see the same errors?
Have you checked the Intel docs for errata on either part?
Disabling NCQ may just be significant, or it may of course just be
slowing down throughput such that the error is less likely to occur -
assuming it's timing-related.
Tim.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for getting back to me.

I do not think so, but I have attached the output from this for each
drive. sdb is where it has happened most recently (four times since
4th August).

I didn't manage to get this machine into service yet before having
this happen so none of this sort of disk monitoring is running. I
can't seem to trigger the problem with any of my usual invocations
of smartctl -i, -A or -x.
When this first occurred I ran a full SMART long self-test of what
was at the time sdb (at the moment it's sda), and that passed.

Unfortunately this is difficult to test as it's in a 1U enclosure
with only 1 slot at the back of the chassis, which is currently
filled. I'll be looking into what I can do with a riser card as a
last resort if I can find out a SATA chipset that is definitely
known to work with the s3610 drives.
Offlist I had someone report that their entire batch of 3710 drives
was suffering this same problem when plugged into Intel C220
chipset; this being on a platform where they previously had other
Intel drives including 3500 and 3700 without issue.
I have a support case open with Intel but they haven't given me any
useful info yet. They actually seem keen to take the drives back
under warranty but it looks like this would result in a replacement
that has the exact same problems. I don't even know if the problem
is in the drive or the SATA chipset or the kernel or what, yet. :(

Yep, can't find anything there.

Indeed. Disabling NCQ reduces the IOPS performance to around 25% so
it's not something I can just put up with!
Increasing the queue depth to 8 restores pretty much full
performance so I will do some tests to see if this problem re-occurs
there and at other values, but this takes a long time as the problem
only appears rarely for me.
Cheers,
Andy

My mistake, their chipset is actually Intel C602. They were just
speculating that my C220 chipset may have the same issue as they are
seeing the same problems on 3610 and 3710 drives, but not on 3500
and 3700 for same hardware.
Do you think the next best thing to try is still a different SATA
controller?
Cheers,
Andy

Difficult to say, if it's easy to do so I think I would (even if it's a
temporary job just running the chassis with the case open during
testing), as it may help to localise the problem to the SSD or chipset.
Getting hold of the right person at Intel might be tricky - may be worth
asking them if there's anyone specifically at the Intel Open-Source
Technology Center it would be worth talking to, or maybe trying to find
someone there directly?
Tim.

Hello,
sorry for a rude top-post and please CC me in a main discussion afterward.
Since yesterday since I found the same issue with C602 and S3710 in
mine production and stood in horror for a couple of moments, I made a
small amount of runs with fio to check if the issue is here or not for
certain configuration, here are preliminary results:
- isci in all LTS are affected, if I could use this wording in
appearance of an obviously broken hardware counterparts,
- setting device`s qd=1 is *not* fixing the issue for me,
- setting noncq for a specific link closes the deal.
Therefore, I`d like to propose to either add hook from scsi code to
set horkage_on on setting queue_depth to 1 and removing it back at
runtime, or to reword libata faq [1], as for me there is a clear
difference between actual NCQ disablement for a link/controller and
setting queue depth to 1, the bus resets are still appearing in a
second case.
