* Problems with Promise SATAII TX4

Hi all,

Together with a couple of others I have been bitten by problems with the
Promise SATAII TX4 controller.

Common to all is that at some point the kernel log contains the "irq
<SOME NUMBER>: nobody cared!" error message, followed by a call/stack
trace. This is quickly followed up by a "Disabling IRQ #<SOME NUMBER>"
which effectively kills the SATA controller and access to the disks.

Although a somewhat unusual request, could I ask somebody to look at
this

information there to repost here.

In my case (posted under <rasmussen>) I temporarily seem to have gotten
around it by replacing a driver with another of a different brand.
However, this is not the case for others.

Any idea of what's going on? To me it looks like some interrupt isn't
cleared or something like that (but I'm just guessing).

Earlier this month I repeatedly reported a data corruption issue (with
no trap) with the sata_promise support for this card, but got no
response whatsoever from the driver author.

I was able to work around this problem only by using Promise's driver,
but I had to revert from the 2.6 to 2.4 kernel.

Hi,

I'm experiencing problems with my Promise SATAII TX4 controller, quite
similar to what Kim reported a few months ago.

Using a fresh linux-2.6.12.5 upstream kernel to boot into a rescue shell
(so there's no distribution specific stuff going on, nothing else
loaded, etc.), I can access my three connected Maxtor 120GB drives just
fine, as long as I do so individually.

   e.g.
   $ dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null
   $ dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/null
   $ dd if=/dev/sdc of=/dev/null

Accessing 2 drives concurrently

   e.g.
   $ dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null &
   $ dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/null &

is fine too, but as soon as I concurrently start accessing a third drive
as well (in whatever order, it's not specific to sdc), the system starts
to get in serious trouble:

Either immediately or after just a few seconds, I can hear some kind of
"clonk" sound (I've physically disconnected all other drives, so it's
probably one/some/all of the drives) and just after that, the kernel
dumps something like this:

I've attached my configuration file, the lspci -vv output and
/proc/interrupts as well as /proc/scsi/scsi output (the latter three
were produced running my regular debian 2.6.12-1-686 kernel though).


I'm not sure what causes the problems, as I definitely had success
synchronising my RAID5 array at the very beginning of the installation
of this card (~01.08.2005) and the first breakage surfaced almost two
weeks later during the nightly backup (lots of read traffic -> interrupt
disabled -> RAID broken/disabled -> system hang).

So, what I'm probably trying to say is, I don't know whether this
couldn't be some kind of hardware problem instead. Originally I was
using a SiI based controller, which apparently caused the connected
drives to rapidly develop bad sectors (in 4 cases they remained broken
during an analysis from another system and in 1 case it was somehow
specific to the SiI controllers "view" of the drive *shrug*).

Or maybe I was just very lucky and the bug was there all the time.


Now, if you have any idea what I could do/test/install/send you to clear
this up or fix the bug, please tell me! I'd really appreciate any kind
of help on this.

OK, apparently it's somewhat hardware related after all. I've added a
Seagate drive (Model: ST3120827AS, Rev: 3.42) and reading from this
drive together with two of the Maxtor drives (any two of the three)
currently works without problems (for now).

Switching ports and cables doesn't change anything, so it's not related
to that.

But how can that be? The individual drives don't reveal any problems and
(as reported in my previous mail) the drives worked seamlessly for a few
weeks ...

I'll have to do some more testing and this is probably off-topic by now,
so I'll stop with the noise now.

Hi again,

to follow up on myself again and just for the record, the problems
("nobody cared, disabling" interrupt errors while accessing several
drives simultaneously on the same Promise SATAII TX4 controller)
disappeared after hanging all drives on a seperate power supply unit. So
now I'm happily running with a 430W PSU powering the system and a ~200W
PSU powering the 4 drives.

I'm not sure why the system needs more than 430W, but with the new
setup, I can read from 4 drives at once without any problems. Before
this box was converted into a server we probably never tried to access
several drives simultaneously, so I can't really blame anything in specific.

So, my thanks primarily go to Andrey Melnikoff for the right hint (in
private mail). Thanks a lot!

unfortunately, total watts is inadequate for characterizing a PSU.
it's about like classifying cars by how tall they are.

in particular, many non-server higher-watt PSU's are designed to provide
extra power for systems which consume power mainly on the CPU/video voltages,
and may not provide enough power for disks.  further, modern motherboards
have voltage converters for the CPU and video which are less sensitive 
to power quality, and will thus "brownout" some power buses.  after all, 
a typical CPU wants 1.5V or so at an obscene current.  disk electronics, 
as far as I have seen, tend to treat their supply as clean and regulated.

Interesting, in relation to my setup and problems. I have a 300W PSU
feeding 2/3 (one standby/spun down). It works with harddisk cooling fans
installed (wow... noise!!!) and stops working with the fans removed.

I guess harddisks (and IC's in general) start using more power when
they're hotter)?!

New PSU is underway, including more power (har, har) and better fans.
I'll report when all is installed.

BTW my system has a 300W PSU but consumes about 195W according to a
power meter on the primary (230V) side. Which of course is only
comparable up to a certain level.

Also BTW note that besides a total max power, PSU's also have ratings
per voltage and some even per outlet. Maybe that's where the pain comes
from ;-)

A nice "bogus power" error message in the (S)ATA standard would have
been ehrm... beneficial.
