Exactly, that's why I advised him to send another mail to the
linux-kernel list,
since I think it is related to some of the acpi changes from 2.6.12 to

If he switches off acpi then performance is back to normal and since
there were basically no changes in the ide code
or code for his controller it must be related to other changes.
