So we took an AHCI interrupt when ata_port.scsi_host was still NULL.

It appears that ATA is presently requesting its IRQ before allocating all
the resources which are needed to handle an interrupt.  Does this
(resource-leaky) patch fix things?

No, that would break host probing.  The port is in frozen (controller
initialized and IRQs masked off) state, so it's not allowed to take
interrupt.  If interrupt triggers at this point, it's low level driver
bug.  Berck, how reliably can you reproduce this problem?  Can you post
the result of 'lspci -nn'?

Hmmm... Once properly initialized, ahci is highly unlikely to cause
runaway IRQs which results in nobody cared.  It has proper IRQ mask and
pending bits allowing the driver to reliably detect when and why the
controller is raising interrupt and disable it if necessary.  Can you
try without the NVIDIA module?

I'm beginning to think it was a one-time hardware error of some sort.
I've been running 2.6.21-rc7-mm2 for awhile now and the problem hasn't
reoccurred, so I think you can consider the matter settled...

Neither of those two are going to help in all cases. They are PCI writes
to mmio so they are posted. You don't know they hit the device until a
read cycle coming back has completed, so you need to read something after
doing this to be sure.

Actually now I think about it the problem is even worse. On older systems
IRQ delivery for SMP machines is asynchronous. So the following can occur


		device raises IRQ line
		IRQ request hits APIC bus

		We write IRQ off
		We clear IRQ pending

		We read back to ensure the write took
	

		IRQ arrives on CPU APIC

(and yes this happens on dual P3 boxes - NE2K has some fantastic bugs at
one point due to this)

I believe so providing the IRQ handler tries to clear the cause of the
IRQ.

Sounds dodgy.  What happens if the IRQ line is shared with some other
device?  We'll enter ahci_interrupt().  We've alread set up ->port_map and
->n_ports so we're wholly dependent upon that read from HOST_IRQ_STAT
returning zeroes.

if that happens we're dead, aren't we?

Berck doesn't apepar to be sharing that IRQ, so it'll be something else.

However do note that if CONFIG_DEBUG_SHIRQ is enabled, request_irq() will
deliberately run the handler, to catch buggy drivers.

Shared IRQ is okay because ahci has pending IRQ register which is masked
by ->freeze().  Controllers which don't have such feature check qc
status to determine whether it's expecting IRQ, so it's okay for them
too.  So, AFAIK, libata is okay with shared IRQs.

I'm pretty sure Berck's problem is caused by ->freeze() not clearing
pending IRQ bit.  We haven't been too strict about ->freeze().
Considering the above 0xffffffff case, I agree it's better to fix it in
the core instead of fixing each LLD.  Will brew up another patch.
