Thanks Tejun,
I have applied the patch and rebuilt the module. I do not seem to be
getting the same error (although it only shows up during heavy disk
activity). But now I am getting a lot of spurious interrupts.

[PATCH] sata_sil24: fix IRQ clearing race when PCIX_IRQ_WOC is used
When PCIX_IRQ_WOC is used, sil24 has an inherent race condition
between clearing IRQ pending and reading IRQ status. If IRQ pending
is cleared after reading IRQ status, there's possibility of lost IRQ.
If IRQ pending is cleared before reading IRQ status, spurious IRQs
will occur.
sata_sil24 till now cleared IRQ pending after reading IRQ status thus
losing IRQs on machines where PCIX_IRQ_WOC was used. Reverse the
order and ignore spurious IRQs if PCIX_IRQ_WOC.

Please apply without the previous patch. Also, this is the correct
version.

Hmmm... So, when did the above error occur? Can you reproduce it?

This error occurred when assembling a software raid 5 array using mdadm.
It also happened when copying large amounts of data from one drive to
another. I saw from an earlier post to disable or upgrade smartd. I
tried this (disabled) and moved about 50gb between disks and the error
has not repeated yet.

Tejun,
Below is the kernel log from boot to when error occurred. You can see
right when the raid5 array was built and started the recovery process
the exception occurred. Also, its now been 24 hours since I disabled
smartd and have not seen any other exceptions since. (also included is
output from smartd -V)
Thanks,
Jon

All errors are interface CRC errors reported by device on FPDMA_WRITE.
It doesn't seem to have anything to do with SMART. In all cases, SError
DIAG is reporting handshake error too (R_ERR received). I'm fairly sure
these were actual hardware problems. You don't have to pay too much
attention unless it happens repeatedly. Good cure for the problem is
probably to re-seat the harddrive.
Bruce, I don't think this is SMART related. Sorry about the noise. Thanks.

Jon: as Tejun says, the ICRC errors indicate a problem with the data
cabling or connections between the drive and the controller. Replug,
clean, examine (and perhaps replace) SATA cables and/or connectors. The
SMART error log (smartctl -L) might also show entries for the ICRC errors
(with timestamps that might be useful).

Tejun: thank you again, no worries, and definitely no apologies needed!

Bruce

Thanks Bruce and Tejun,
I have replaced the hot swap drive tray of the drive in question,
rebooted and reinstalled the latest version of smartmontools. So far I
have read and wrote about 50GB of data to the raid array over the last
18 hours with smartd running and have not seen any kernel error
messages. Looks like the interconnect was at fault.
Thanks again for the help,
Jon

Jon: always nice when computers act like finite-state machines, not like
incomprehensible organic devices.
Tejun: thanks again.
