- Which kernel version is it?
- Do you have kernel log of the crash?
[ photo of the screen will be fine ]

------- Comment #2 from qrees@poczta.fm 2008-03-02 05:52 -------
As I said, There is no log of the crash, because system just stops working. It
just freezes, I can't move mouse, change console... nothing. I can only press
reset button... I have tested many kernel versions, but this bug apears in 2.2,
2.4, 2.6 kernels.
Photo would be quite useless, because screen looks normal . There are no
additional messages on the screen. What's more it's quite difficult to show
that the screen (and anything else...) is frozen on photo ;).
PS: in 1st post should be vt8233 chipset, not via8233 chipset (which doesn't
exist ;) ).

Have you tried 2.6.25-rc3 or 2.6.24?
- If there is no log of the crash and no error messages - why do you think it
is via82cxxx is the cul?

Because I have vt8233 chipset and this module is responsible for DMA support on
this chipset (at least I think so). When I turn off DMA system is stable. This
might be some other module, but it's definitely something with DMA on vt8233
chipset.

Thanks.
Please try 2.6.25-rc3, there were massive IDE changes in 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 so
the issue it might got fixed already.

This looks more and more like a broken hardware (or a very device specific
problem) as via82cxxx is known to work fine with recent kernels and there were
no other bugreports recently. Please send dmesg command output for the working
kernel so we can see what devices are involved.
W.R.T. to 2.6.25-rc(3?) problem:
Could you try using git-bisect to narrow down the problem to a specific commit?
Please install git package, get kernel git tree from kernel.org and do:
git bisect start
git bisect good 2.6.23
git bisect bad 2.6.25-rc3
It will select the kernel to test, compile and boot it to see if the problem is
still there. If so do "git bisect bad" which will give you new kernel to test.
If the kernel works fine do "git bisect good" instead. After few iterations
you should find the exact commit which introduced the bug.

Ok, I've tested kernel version 2.6.24.8 and it didn't creash, but it's doesn't
mean that it won't crash later. I'll test it for a week or so and see if it
works fine. The problem with testing is that system may crash after few minutes
or after few weeks. Even if finding kernel with git bisect might take only few
iterations, one iteration may take very long time... I haven't found any
software that always makes system crash...
And about "drive not ready for command" error. This is related to Benq DVD
drive, and is discribed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/182996. I've disconnected
Benq drive and system did boot.

Thanks but I was asking specifically for narrowing down this problem (since it
looks like regression) - this would greatly help us in fixing it.

Ok, I've tested kernel 2.6.25-rc5 and it does crash (just like any other
kernel).
After the crash Num Lock and Caps Lock blink, but I don't know what does it
mean...
