I considered rebasing the whole thing on char-misc-next, but the mess up is only in the last
few (46ish) patches and it would take for a lot more tag updating to rebase
and resolve the minor confict.
I could merge in at the end but there seems little benefit as we'll just end
up with a stack of merges. So I hope you don't mind resolving as before.
