The issue here is that the scancode is already present in the keymap with the type "KE_IGNORE" instead of "KE_KEY", but sparse_keymap seems to send KEY_UNKNOWN anyway. No, sparse keymap does not generate KEY_UNKNOWN events for entries marked KE_IGNORE. As far as I can see none of the codes mentioned by Konstantin are defines in keymap found in asus-nb-wmi. Depending on how frequently the light conditions change, the number of events generated can be quite large, as often as every second.
