To me it feels like these prints from the notify handlers should be
ratelimited just in case, but then I notice the other drivers don't
ratelimit them either so perhaps it has never caused an issue.

Please always declare variables at the beginning of a function or a block,
not in the middle of it. The only allowed exception to this rule is
