I suspect that you have reached a fundamental limitation and that 2.5 will provide no advantage and maybe even be worse since it has other stuff in it that probably take up more space. Less windows may help a little. Building a custom kernel (if you have not already) that does not have drivers and things that you will not be using also may help. If you can add memory, that will help too but 64 MB should be reasonable.
