Dear Sir/Madam,
I am using RedHat7.1 with Kernel version 2.4.2-2. I downloaded the binaries patch-generator0.91beta7 rpm. i follow the instructions(i.e. ./configure and then make in PATCHES, then a patch -p1 < /xx/xxx/PATCHES/xxxxx.patch) to patch the kernel and everything wents well when i do a make config in the /usr/src/linux, configuring the LVM as a modules.
But i cannot do a make modules, after i make dep;make clean;make bzlilo, lots of compilation errors jump out.
I then try compile the LVM in the kernel by running make config again. after i build everything, when i run the vgscan, it says "lvmiopversion -- LVM driver/module not loaded?"
Seemingly the LVM module/compilation doesn't work for this kernel.
Could u please help me on it?
Thanks very much in advance.
Best regards
Leo Wong

Where is your kernel source located? Did you specify this location when you
ran ./configure? (ie, './configure --with-kernel_dir=/usr/src/linux-2.4.2-2')
> But i cannot do a make modules, after i make dep;make clean;make bzlilo, lots of compilation errors jump out.
A log of the exact errors would be nice. I really don't have any idea what
is going wrong unless I can see those.
> I then try compile the LVM in the kernel by running make config again. after i build everything, when i run the vgscan, it says "lvmiopversion -- LVM driver/module not loaded?"
Did you install the new kernel and reboot? It may be possible to get along
without rebooting if you are building the kernel modules, but you will
definitely need to reboot if LVM is built into the kernel.
> Seemingly the LVM module/compilation doesn't work for this kernel.
It should work, but RedHat puts a lot of additional patches into their
kernels, and it is possible there is a conflict somewhere. Did the patch
apply cleanly?

I'm running Redhat 7.1 kernel vmlinux-2.4.2-2smp. I have tried a number
of times and can only conclude that I'm missing some step(s).
I have downloaded and installed the following RPMs from
ftp://ftp.sistina.com/pub/LVM/binaries/redhat/0.9.1_beta in the order:
1) lvm-base-1.1-1.i386.rpm
rebooted
2a) lvm-iop10-0.9.1_beta7-1.i386.rpm
2b) lvm-iop10-lib-0.9.1_beta7-1.i386.rpm
3) lvm-iop10-man-0.9.1_beta7-1.i386.rpm
4) lvm-iop10-patchgen-0.9.1_beta7-1.i386.rpm
rebooted
Per the instructions in the LVM HOWTO section 7.4
I edited the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit to add the following lines:
/sbin/vgscan
/sbin/vgchange -ay
and the file /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt with the following line
/sbin/vgchange -an
I boot my system using PowerQuest BootMagic and enter my Redhat
Partition.
As Linux is booting and the vgscan is executed I see the following error
message:
vgscan
lvmiopversion -- LVM driver/module not loaded?
vgscan: /lib/lvm-iop not found. Is lvm-iop installed?
I get the same message if I try to run vgscan after logging in and the
same or similar message from any vg command.
Also when I run lsmod, I do not see LVM listed and it is not under
/proc.
I verified the install of all five rpm(s) and do not understand what I
may be doing wrong.
I can only conclude that it is not loading and I'm missing something.
Please HELP
Thanks
Tom

You need to build a kernel with LVM support built into it to use this. The
default Redhat kernel does not have this. The lvm-iop10-patchgen* packages
contain a stripped down version of the LVM source code made just for
patching a stock kernel (from ftp.kernel.org). If you need a Redhat kernel
that supports LVM, you should talk to Redhat and let them know it is a
requirement of yours.
You should look at the LVM HowTo at http://sistina.com/lvm/Pages/howto.html

I have had success with the 2.4.3 kernel from RedHat. The difference is I
didn't use RPMS, but went with the pure tarball. Following the INSTALL
instructions worked perfectly for me.

I am running a Mandrake 8.0 2.4.8 (or 2.4.9) kernel and cannot find the patch files on the ftp site.
Has anyone thought to add the "FAQ" into the "How-To" or create a combined PDF version of the FAQ/How-To or a PDF version of the FAQ?

Suart,
patches are created automagically(TM) running make in the PATCHES/ subdirectory
of the LVM source distro. Please follow the instructions in the contained
INSTALL and PATCHES/README files in order to hear the full story.

I didn't think about this that way before, because both documents solve
different purposes.
FAQ is ment to be a source of questions/answers for typical problems
*but*
HOWTO is a bunch of process descriptions for achiving arbitrary
goals with LVM correctly.
If I missed your point, please provide some examples HOWTO ;-) integrate
FAQs and HOWTO.

Dear Sir:
Silly me, I followed the instructions in the How-To (30 AUG 2001) which notes there is a patch directory on the ftp site which obviously does not exist. Perhaps the maintainer of the How-To can correct this anomaly so I am able to follow correct instructions.

Hi,
I need a LVM patch, witch is working with a 2.4.5-xfs-1.0.1 kernel on RedHat
7.1.
I got the xfs patches from http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/patchlist.html.
Greetings, Sebastian.

All the SGI kernels I've had have LVM in them.
Or is it that you want a newer one?
First thing you might try reading the patch. If you're lucky, they
change different bits and it's just a matter of line numbers and you can
make the changes (and/or a new patch) easily.

Yes, I was trying lvm-1.0.1-rc4-2.4.5.patch. I don't know for shure the
version that is included in the original kernel, but I think it isn't working
with the latest LVM tools (lvm-1.0.1-rc4), because I get core dumps with
lvcreate.

Sorry, but I don't have much experiences with kernel patching. I would do it
if could. ;-(
Thanks, Sebastian.

I am trying to install LVM-1.0.1-rc4 on a S/390 SuSe 7.0 system with kernel
2.2.16.
Has anyone successfully managed to create a patch for kernel 2.2.16 ?
I have copied the fragments-2.2.18 to 2.2.16 and have made the
lvm-1.0.1-rc4-2.2.16.patch file.
It will need some reworking to get the patch to apply correctly. Has
anyone else succeded in doing this, and have they shared the patch file ?
Thanks,
Dave Scott

Upgrade to 2.2.19 (or 2.2.20pre?). There are a lot of important fixes
between 2.2.16 and the latest as far as I can recall and you'll make
your life easier by doing so.
Sincerely,
Adrian Phillips

Hi, I have succeed to patch LVM for Kernel 2.2.12 with LVM 1.0.2
LVM 1.0.2 is available to Kernel version 2.2.18,
but I tried to patch for Kernel 2.2.12 and succeed, although some
modification was required.
Just Some modification, not critical part.
Just try to patch LVM for Kernel 2.2.20. following sequence.
It is required to modify patch file's line numbers.
Good luck.
