note someone just sent me a "secure" email via this group such that i had to
click on it to open it, I binned it immediately.

I would appreciate it if all posts are plain text, I cannot fathom why any
more is needed.

All of my e-mails are sent with a GPG signature attached. This is to help
verify the authenticity of support mail I send to the list. They are still
sent in plain text, but if you want to delete them, that's your perogative.

If you mailer can't properly represent the SMIME standard,
that's your problem. I would suggest you find another one. It's a well
published spec, and email really does need to be more secure.
Cryptographically signing every message is an excellent way to help
accomplish this.

If you throw away every signed message, you'll be missing about
10% of the content of this list, and some of the better and more
informative posts. Most notably, all of AJ Lewis's messages are signed.

Have fun (if at all possible),

I don't have problems with AJ's emails (or any other PGP signed messages
for that matter), even though I currently don't actually do PGP myself.
However, the post in question just appeared as empty in my mailer (elm).
The entire body was in an attachment "smime.p7m" which I had to save to
disk to look at. For that matter, it was poorly sent (IMHO) twice as
an uncompressed 25k line email. Luckily I have a fast net connection.
I'm also not about to get a new email program...

Maybe we should put a size cap on emails sent to linux-lvm? This will
encourage people to use bugzilla. Also, most of the large patches go to
lvm-devel (mine at least). If possible, the "rejection" email for large
emails should mention the bugzilla web page URL for convenience.

Cheers, Andreas

Ah...my bad...forgot about that one. Sorry for going off. Yeah, that's
odd. It basically appeared as a one-liner for me in mutt. I could open it
from mutt, but yeah, it was odd. This is the first time I've seen this
though...stupid M$ LookOUT!

That might make sense. Can we assume everyone has access to a browser and
will be willing to use if for bug reports? I know it makes it a lot easier
for us as developers to track the bugs if they are reported there, but I'm
not sure that everyone is willing to do so. Plus, many times people send
bug reports from the console during the LVM install process, and so may not
have easy access to a browser. I know Heinz initially had some concern about
limiting file size on the list, so we'll have to get his opinion on this.

AJ, maybe it was a beer cask size concern ;-)

Anyway:

 - please try to keep mails on the list as small as possible in order
to ideally make it easy for every list member to follow their content
 - please report bugs to bugzilla
 - if this is exceptionally not possible, send us email and we'll put it in
   bugzilla for you
 - if people really need to send larger content -> negotiate this fact on the
list beforehand and rather send it by private email

Somebody oughta write a program that figures exactly what
version of LVM, Kernel, and LVM tools are installed, and
writes the bug report for you. Debian has something like
this called "bug". You run "bug mutt", and it figures out
all the versions of mutt, the kernel (uname -a), and the
libraries that mutt depends on. You just give it the
program, a description of the bug, and the severity, and
it fills in the bug report and e-mails it for you. Very
nice when you find a bug, but you're in the middle of
something and don't have the time to research and figure
everything out yourself. It'll even attach the core file
if you want.
