I just upgraded a system to RedHat 7.2 (+ XFS from SGI) (lvm-1.0.1RC4),
and I'm trying to mount a LVM-based logical volume created using LVM
0.9mumble. The volume group consisted of a single PV on opt of a
software RAID5 device.
pvscan says:
pvscan -- reading all physical volumes (this may take a while...)
pvscan -- WARNING: physical volume "/dev/sda" belongs to a meta
device
pvscan -- inactive PV "/dev/md0" is associated to an unknown VG (run
vgscan)
pvscan -- total: 2 [8.48 GB] / in use: 2 [8.48 GB] / in no VG: 0 [0]
And pvdisplay says:
--- Physical volume ---
PV Name /dev/md0
VG Name vg0
PV Size 8.48 GB / NOT usable 2.75 MB [LVM: 129.00 KB]
PV# 1
PV Status NOT available
Allocatable yes (but full)
Cur LV 1
PE Size (KByte) 4096
Total PE 2169
Free PE 0
Allocated PE 2169
PV UUID HHv1Tm-79Hx-uk4m-caqb-QUA5-8WGF-0yUe4Q
Which looks great. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to
turn this back into a valid volume group. Vgscan doesn't pick up this
device:
vgscan -- reading all physical volumes (this may take a while...)
vgscan -- "/etc/lvmtab" and "/etc/lvmtab.d" successfully created
vgscan -- WARNING: This program does not do a VGDA backup of your
volume group
How do I recover this volume?
Thanks,
-- Lars

You may need to re-create your MD RAID device /dev/md0.

Sure. lvmdiskscan says:
# lvmdiskscan
lvmdiskscan -- reading all disks / partitions (this may take a
while...)
lvmdiskscan -- /dev/sda [ 4.24 GB] free whole disk
lvmdiskscan -- /dev/sdb [ 4.24 GB] free whole disk
lvmdiskscan -- /dev/sdc [ 4.24 GB] free whole disk
lvmdiskscan -- /dev/sdd [ 4.24 GB] free whole disk
lvmdiskscan -- /dev/sde1 [ 47.03 MB] Primary LINUX native
partition [0x83]lvmdiskscan -- /dev/sde2 [ 4.00 GB] Primary
LINUX native partition [0x83]lvmdiskscan -- /dev/sde3 [ 698.14 MB]
Primary LINUX swap partition [0x82]
lvmdiskscan -- /dev/md0 [ 8.48 GB] free meta device
lvmdiskscan -- 6 disks
lvmdiskscan -- 4 whole disks
lvmdiskscan -- 0 loop devices
lvmdiskscan -- 1 multiple device
lvmdiskscan -- 0 network block devices
lvmdiskscan -- 3 partitions
lvmdiskscan -- 0 LVM physical volume partitions
So lvmdiskscan doesn't see the PV, despite the fact that pvscan does:
pvscan -- reading all physical volumes (this may take a while...)
pvscan -- WARNING: physical volume "/dev/sda" belongs to a meta
device
pvscan -- inactive PV "/dev/md0" is associated to an unknown VG (run
vgscan)
pvscan -- total: 2 [8.48 GB] / in use: 2 [8.48 GB] / in no VG: 0 [0]

The RAID device appears to be working just fine. With the MD driver,
simply recreating /etc/raidtab and running raidstart worked without a
problem.

You saw the other posting about the MD devices fix? This is fixed in
CVS, but not 1.0.1rc4. Maybe it is time for a new LVM release.
Cheers, Andreas

Hmm, I missed the other post, but I'll try the latest from cvs and see
if that helps.

That appears to have fixed the problem; vgscan now detects the older
logical volume and I can mount it successfully.
Now I've got a new problem, but it's going in a new thread :).

We are planning one for the end of the week.

If so please push the chagnes into the kernel asap. Lets not end up months
behind in the kernel again - please! When you release, send the patches to
Linus or Marcelo at the same time. If it was up to me I would send the patches
first, then release.
Thanks

The kernel and CVS are still different, so they need a bit of merging
anyways. There is a _huge_ merge from Alan into the Linus tree right now,
to get the kernel up to 1.0.1rc4 or so. I don't know if it is better to
do more changes now, or to wait until those previous changes are in an
official release, so there is less change all at the same time.
Cheers, Andreas
