did you

1) install the LVM tools with a 'make install' as root?
2) install the new kernel into your grub.conf or lilo.conf?
3) either make it the default or select it upon rebooting?

Personally I like to compile static kernels for servers, it makes them
easier for me to audit (IMHO).  I have attached a .config file that I
used to build a working LVM server with experimental Symbios drivers.
