Interesting, I've tried to run the second test application on debian squeeze 
(stable) and it worked so this could be a regression...

It works with 
lvm2 2.02.66
gcc 4.4.5
glibc 2.13

While it doesn't with
lvm2 2.02.96-2
gcc 4.7.1-1
glibc 2.15
