The attached patch implements the new dib0700 i2c API, which requires
v1.20 of the firmware. It addresses some classes of i2c problems (in
particular the one I had where i2c reads were being sent onto the bus
as i2c write calls)
I would appreciate it if those with dib0700 based devices would try
out the patch and provide feedback as to whether they have any
problems. I've done testing with the Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro USB 801e
stick, but I don't have any other dib0700 based devices.
Thanks to Patrick Boettcher for providing the firmware, sample code,
and peer review of the first version of this patch.
Regards,
Devin

Add support for new i2c API provided in firmware version 1.20
From: Devin Heitmueller <devin.heitmueller@gmail.com>
The Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro has an xc5000, which exposed a bug in the dib0700's
i2c implementation where it did not properly support a single i2c read request
(sending it as an i2c write request instead). Version 1.20 of the firmware
added support for a new i2c API which supported such requests.
This change defaults to fw 1.20 for all devices, as well as defaulting to
using the new i2c API. For testing purposes, the maintainer can disable
use of the new i2c API (falling back to the legacy calls) by putting the
following into their frontend initialization:
struct dib0700_state *st = adap->dev->priv;
st->fw_use_legacy_i2c_api = 1;
Also note that the code expects i2c repeated start to be supported. If the
i2c slave does not support repeated start, i2c messsages should have the
I2C_M_NOSTART flag set.
Thanks to Patrick Boettcher <patrick.boettcher@desy.de> for providing new
firmware fixing the issue as well as example i2c code utilizing the interface.

Hi,
Thanks for your work, first of all. ¿Do you think this patch might
solve the problems that seem to be appeared since the new firmware is out
with the Hauppauge Nova-T 500, like random reboots, etc... (what's ths state
on this, anyway?) ?
I delayed the adoption of the new 1.20 firmware because of those problems,
because I didn't want to leave the machine in a complete unusable state...
Best regards,
Eduard Huguet

Hi Eduard,
We had some problems with previous I2C implementation and the 1.20 is
really fixing them - they were hard to find. But the problem we had were
not on the Nova-T 500... Still I think it could be related.
So depending on any previous behaviour of the device it can only be better
or worse, both results are interesting in order to know whether this
firmware can be become the main one or not.
best regards,
Patrick.

Sorry I for my going AWOL...
I've spending most of my time out of my country of residence for a
project these last 6 months.
Testing is a bit difficult for me. My WAF goes down when I spent part of
the week end on the TV computer testing stuff instead of spending
quality time with the family. Also, I do not want to leave the only TV
system in the house in an unstable state right before leaving for a
trip.
However, it seems that my problems with the 1.20 firmware were most
probably due to leftover 1.10 files scattered
around /lib/firmware/linux*.
I may be wrong and I did not spend much time on this, as I reverted to
1.10 before boarding yet another plane.
I may have experienced a remote control issue too.
But again, I did not take the time to properly sit in front of the
system and test things with a clear mind and some proper process.
Sorry.
Maybe this week-end.

Well, regarding the Nova-T 500 I must say that, using the current HG driver
code and 1.10 firmware, it's pretty rock solid. I've had no USB disconnects
nor hangs of any time since a long time ago (since lastest patches for this
card were merged).
That's the reason I'm very reluctant to use the new firmware, specially if
the effect seems to be a constantly rebooting machine, as Nicolas Will
described ;-). However, if the above patche solves the problems then I'll be
very pleased to test it.

Eduard

It seems that Nicholas's problems had to do with having random copies
of 1.10 in /lib/firmware.
This is about more than "does it fix my problem". The patch I am
submitting could cause potential breakage with other devices, so I
need people who have a stable environment to test the change and make
sure it doesn't cause breakage.
Otherwise, it just gets pushed in, you do an "hg update" and all of a
sudden your environment is broken.
The patch is known to fix several problems required to get the xc5000
working with the dib0700, but I want to be sure people with a working
environment don't start seeing problems.

So people using the following devices should help test:

Mmmh... I don't see how having "random" copies around (whatever this means)
of the 1.10 firmware can make the computer reboot. The driver attempts to
load the firmware. If it can it's loaded, if not it fails, nothing more.
Anyway, I'll be somewhat busy this week to test this. But as soon as I find
the time I'll try to i.e. compile a separate kernel that uses both this
patch and the new firmware and then provide testing. At least this way I'll
be sure I'll be able to revert back to my rock-stable configuration by just
choosing the appropiate grub entry at boot.
Otherwise, trying to fix a machine that is constantly rebooting due to a
driver can be a very nasty thing... ;)
