There are some distros that have .gz modules. Those aren't overridden by make install. The better procedure to generate a clean driver is to do: make distclean make rminstall make rmmod make make install If make rminstall still doesn't remove the old modules, you can always do: rm -rf /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media And then, reinstall again, with make install.
