Hi,

after Telenor switched from Thor-2 to Thor-5 (0.8W) no lock is possible with
multiproto(-plus) and TT S2-3200 at these transponders:

TV4 HD;Telenor:11341:vC34M5O35S1:S0.8W:25000:512:0;641=sve:0:B00:1405:70:42:0
CANAL+ FILM
HD;Telenor:11421:hC34M5O35S1:S0.8W:25000:513:644=eng;645=eng:0:B00:3306:70:14:0
Nat Geo
HD;Telenor:11434:vC34M5O35S1:S0.8W:25000:512:640=eng:0:B00:3806:70:38:0

I'm 100% sure that this problem corresponds with switch from Thor-2 to Thor-5
as it appeared exactly at times when switch was announced by Telenor.

Regarding to official document
http://www.telenorsbc.com/upload/PDFS/DVB-S2%20Transponder%20FEC%20Change_280208.pdf
two changes were implemented - FEC from 2/3 to 3/4 and switch off Pilot.

On the same HW under Windows it is running ok.

If somebody could point me to any direction I'll glad to cooperate in
debugging.

Regards,

Ales

Perhaps you can try to increase the freq by 4Mhz, that's what I did
here (DVB-S though) and I have a perfect picture since then.

Hi,

thanks for your hint, but I've already tried it. Without result, but this time
I've let it without action for long time at same channel - after 1 or 2
minutes I've got sometimes SYNC, after 8 - 10 minutes LOCK, but unfortunately
only as spikes - once and the driver was falling back to NOSIGNAL, so I'm
still not able to receive any program.

Last week I've tried to play a little with the driver (changing gain,
SearchRange and some other parameters) but without any reasonable result.

As i don't have documentation (datasheets) from used chips I'm not able to
test it more. Could you be so kind and send me info where is possible to got
it? Of course if it is not under NDA.

Thanks,

BR,

Ales

I can't help you more than that, let's hope that someone more
knowledgeable than me can provide you with more infos.

Hi,

my friend told me that he is sometimes able to get lock by decreasing (not
increasing) the frequency. Yesterday I've tested it and it seems to me he was
right. So I'm able to get (not very stable, for few minutes) lock as well as
by increasing and by decreasing frequency of the same channel (EurosportHD).

It was also detected (not by me, I don't have riser card) that when the card
is connected not directly into PCI slot but with some riser card, the needed
difference for getting lock is higher (up to 10MHz). So also some noise from
PC is going into calculations.

I don't think the problem is in computation of frequency but in for example
not stable signal amplitude at input of demodulator or in not fluently
changing the gain and bandwith of tuner within the band. As I see in the code
some parameters are changing in steps and maybe 3 steps for whole band is not
enough? Especially in real conditions (not in lab)?

But under Windows no problems were detected, so it seems that all that
problems are solveable by driver (software).

BR,

Ales

yes. it's right. Also you can decrease/incease the symbol rate - sometimes it can help to get the LOCK.

Igor

The derotator code in the stb0899 seems to be setting the initial frequency to the lowest search range
and never changes this (as it should increase steadily to find a lock)

Could you please try the attached patch if this fixes the problem with
nominal frequency/symbolrate settings?

Many thanks, but I don't see any improvement. Minimum time after I've lock is
150s.

The only improvement was done 2weeks ago when Manu Abraham fixed some headers
with register addresses. From that time it is possible to get lock also at
problematic channels but very unstable.

But I've found that all channels with lock problems are DVB-S2, 8PSK, FEC 3/4.
So all channels broadcasted in QPSK is possible to tune without problems and
also channels broadcasted in DVB-S2, 8PSK, FEC 2/3 are possible to tune to
without problems. Channels in DVB-S2, 8PSK with different FEC (to 2/3 and
3/4) I was not able to test.

Do you think that info could be useful?

BR,

Ales

The patch didnt do anything for me either.
For me the no lock possible applies to dvb-s transpoders as well.
(solvable by +4mhz)
Id like to add that even when i manage to tune with a +4mhz offset,
the signal isnt as good as my stb.
For example the stb shows 60% signal and obviously plays the stream perfectly,
while the card throws macroblocks all over and sometimes even freezes.

I wonder if everyone with that card has problems or just the 4-5 people ive
seen mentioning it in this list.
(im sorry in advance if i did anything retarded with the mailing list... :) )

For me adding 4MHz solved the lock problems for DVB-S QPSK FEC 3/4, but
did not solve my problems for a DVB-S QPSK FEC 5/6.
I will try Dominik's patch to see if it improves things.
Stay tuned (oh well)

So it seems to me that there are more problem in driver that (maybe) could be
solved separately:

1. Some channels/transponders could be tuned by increasing/decreasing freq. by
4-10MHz. This solution is not for me usable. I didn't find any transponder on
such solution is working. But for my friend this is working on transponders
which I'm able to tune to directly. Maybe some problem in tolerance of TT
S2-3200 components or in PC case (grounding or so).

2. Some channels/transponders is not possible to tune if this transponders is
choosing as first after changing satellite (by diseqc switch). This is
generally solved by users by tuning to another transponder at problematic
satellite (for me for example this two transponders use the same
modulation) - it seems not to be modulation problem (timing problem?).

3. At some transponders above 2 point doesn't help to get lock. For me these
transponders are all DVB-S2, 8PSK and FEC3/4.

Maybe I'm not right but hope another small step forward.

BR,

Ales

I don't have the TT S2-3200 yet (it will arive tomorow).
I do have the skystar hd2 which also has the STB0899 and the STB6100.
So maybee some of this info can be usefull.

With this card I have the following situations on astra 19,2:
After a reboot I can't tune to any dvb-s channel.
Tuning to astra hd promo at dvbs-2 11914500H does work.
After that I can successfull tune to these transponders
dvb-s 12574250 22000 5/6 h (bvn)
dvb-s 11836500 27500 3/4 h (erste)
dvb-s 12544750 22000 5/6 h (sat 1)

after adding 4500 to the frequency of bvn, I can change directly to this
channel after a reboot.

The most important thing I can't get working is diseqc switching.
Does anyone use Astra23,5 or hotbird13 with the multiproto driver?
If so, please tell me which channels you can tune to successfuly so I can do
my next tests on those channels.

Greetings,
JoepAdmiraal

i do use a tt s2-3200 with late april multiproto (after the api change)
i use kaffeine with a beta multiproto patch and have no particular
problem using diseqc (0=hd 13 / 1=astra19.2).

I do get some "no lock" from time to time when switching from astra 19.2
to hb 13.0 but zapping back and forth usually fix the problem and i have
the same kind of problem with my dvb-s card with multiproto and v4l-dvb
drivers..

i do remember not being able to lock to Eurosport HD transponder no matter what i tried.

i was wondering if it makes any difference if FEC is set to the correct value when tuning or to the "auto" value.
if i'm correct some zap or scan app i tested and browsed the code, did always use the auto value for FEC..

I have to get back to my kaffeine patch and finish it then maybe i can join your testing with my s2-3200

I'm using multiproto with TT S2-3200 and 4-way diseqc switch (13.0E, 19.2E,
23.5 and motor with secondary dish). No problem, but for motor I'm using
patch in vdr (vdr-1.6.0-gotox.diff).

I have the exact same problem. When Telenor moved the DVB-S2 channels and
changed FEC from 2/3 to 3/4 and turned pilot off all DVB-S2 channels just
stopped working for me. Before the changed I had no problems at all with them.
It have to be somekind of driverproblem since I have done no changes to my
linuxsetup and when I try the card in windoze it works just fine.
I noticed in the pressrelease Telenor published that the netbitrate increased
from 48.391Mbps to 55.703Mbps along with the FEC change. Could that cause any
problems? Or could it be problems with the pilothandling in the driver?

I'm still trying to find the reason of that problem, but (as I think) this is
done not by FEC as well not by bitrate. All channels in 8PSK modulation are
not possible to receive, or the lock is after few minutes. So I'm thinking
that 8PSK is badly handled within the driver.

BR,

Ales

Could it be something with the fact of detecting that it is 8PSK that it needs
to handle? I remember when I first was trying to get the 8PSK channels to work
in MythTV I had to manully set the modulation to 8PSK in the database to get a
lock, if I leaved it to auto it just thought it was a regular DVB-S stream when
you looked at the output in dmesg.

I have a skystar hd (tt 3200 rebranded) and both qpsk and 8psk
transpoders generally work with mythtv.
However tuning at many transpoders is rubbish for me.Take for example
premiere's @ 19e.
adding +4 mhz works for some transpoders ive tried but for some others
like the eurosport hd one
wont help at all. Also even when tuning correctly i see lots of ber
artifacts even though my previous
skystar 2 and my dreambox receiver work flawlessly.
There is a thread here ->
http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/linux-dvb/2008-February/024080.html
where one guy reported that after 7200 the successfully tuned
transpoders are much fewer but it seems
these changes where never reverted.(i suppose because theres a last
reply there where another user says its good)

I found out I did make a mistake.
I can watch a channel with FEC 9/10 on Astra 19.2 (11914.50 H)
However the channels on astra 23.5 won't lock.
The one that is most important for me uses dvb-s2 qpsk according to kingofsat.
So this might be an other problem than the 8psk problem you decribe.

Could you please check whether the reported frequency is sane:
Example: 19.2°E 11915MHz H 27500 DVB-S2

Test1: use the nominal frequency:
 ./simpledvbtune -f 11915 -d 2
dvbfe setparams : delsys=4 1315.000MHz / Rate : 27500kSPS
Status: 1b: Signal Carrier Sync Lock
SNR: 0 44 (0x2c) (4.4dB)
BER: 0 0 0 0 (0x0)
Signal: 5 170 (0x5aa) 1450 (145.0dBm)
Frontend: if=1313.627 MHz

Test2: set positive offset (+3MHz):
./simpledvbtune -f 11918 -d 2
dvbfe setparams : delsys=4 1318.000MHz / Rate : 27500kSPS
Frontend: if=1313.660 MHz
The frontend does automatically locks on the correct frequency

Test3: set negative offset (-4MHz):
./simpledvbtune -f 11911 -d 2
dvbfe setparams : delsys=4 1311.000MHz / Rate : 27500kSPS
Frontend: if=1313.650 MHz

Find lower limit:
./simpledvbtune -f 11896 -d 2 (does not work)
./simpledvbtune -f 11897 -d 2 (works 100%)
dvbfe setparams : delsys=4 1297.000MHz / Rate : 27500kSPS
Frontend: if=1313.654 MHz

Find upper limit:
./simpledvbtune -f 11930 -d 2 (does not work)
./simpledvbtune -f 11929 -d 2 (works 100%)
dvbfe setparams : delsys=4 1329.000MHz / Rate : 27500kSPS
Frontend: if=1313.645 MHz

Which means:
 - I can specify any frequency from 11896MHz to 11929MHz and get 100% lock success
 - and the Frontend (actually the derotator) reports the real frequency (e.g. for auto correcting the channels list)

Cards I have tested so far:
- pctv452e
- mantis (Multimedia controller [0480]: Twinhan Technology Co. Ltd Mantis DTV PCI Bridge Controller [Ver 1.0] [1822:4e35] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Twinhan Technology Co. Ltd Unknown device [1822:0031])

Unfortunately I'm trapped behind a single-cable installation and have only access to 19.2°E Highband Horizontal

Hi,

on the frequency you've mentioned I didn't have any problem (never). But at
lyngsat it is reported as 11914MHz. I never used freq. shifting (only
tested), it was not reasonable for me.

Problems I have are at transponders with 8PSK modulation.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Ales

Hi,

I managed to get access to a 19.2 + 13.0 diseqc dish with a TT-S2 3600 card :)

I wanted to show that there's no reason for setting all frequencies +4Mhz or -4MHz.
This is what my patch is all about :)
The request for test tuning with a offset was to confirm the "bug" i found
in the stb0899 tuning routine

Well, I tested:
19.2 12522 V 8PSK 22000 2/3
i get 100% (and immediate) lock in the range from: 12512 to 12532
(The frontend always reports 1921MHz (i.e. 12521MHz))
the call looks like:
./simpledvbtune -f 12512 -p v -s 22000 -d 2 -a 1
using '/dev/dvb/adapter1/frontend0' as frontend
frontend fd=3: type=0
ioclt: FE_SET_VOLTAGE : 0
High band
tone: 1
dvbfe setparams : delsys=4 1912.000MHz / Rate : 22000kSPS
Status: 1b: Signal Carrier Sync Lock
SNR: 0 22 (0x16) (2.2dB)
BER: 0 0 0 0 (0x0)
Signal: 5 170 (0x5aa) 1450 (145.0dBm)
Frontend: if=1921.821 MHz

19.2 12581 V 8PSK 22000 2/3
works in the range from 12570 to 12590
frontend reports: 1980 (i.e.12580)

13.0 11996 V 8PSK 27500 2/3
 works from 11986 to 12005
frontend reports: 1395 (i.e. 11995)

The other 13.0 8PSK (11278V and 11449H) are tougher: they take a few seconds to lock and sometimes they don't lock at all
according to the NIT they use roll-off factor 0.2 (the other channels use 0.35)
This is interesting: I'll check why this takes so much longer

Hi,
with this transponder I also don't have problem to get lock.

Yes, these transponders are those I couldn't lock. Other transponders with the
same problem are transponders from Thor5 (0.8W) - 11341MHz V, 11421MHz H,
11434MHz V, 12015MHz H and 12128MHz H.

Changig RollOff to any value didn't get me any result.

BR,

Ales

with my hvr4000 card and vdr 170 I could lock these and other dvb-s2 channels from 13e without any problem
