[linux-dvb] Recommendations for a DVB-T card for 2.6.24

Hi, I'm a long-time linux user (since the early 1990s, pre-1.0), but
absolutely brand spanking new to mythtv and digital TV cards. I have a
new PC set up with the latest mythbuntu (beta 8.04, due out in a few
weeks). I've been trying to get a Nova-T 500 to work reliably without
much luck. The card (as noted now on the wiki -- unfortunately not
when I bought it) has serious problems with the new Linux kernel. I
can't get it to work for more than a few hours at a time, and the
remote is even worse. I'm in London, with a strong signal (and a
booster too), so I don't think that's the problem. The PC connected to
the main TV is a backend/frontend, so periodically restarting the
backend doesn't fix the remote control problem (you have to log out
and log back in again, which is too painful for what should be as
simple to use for the wife and kids as sky+...)

I've pulled the latest driver sources, followed all the instructions
on the various wiki pages, have the latest firmware, etc., but I'm
ready to give up. I'm going to try an MCE remote, which by all reports
seems well supported in Linux, and I'm ready to try a new DVB card(s).
Dual-tuner is preferred, but I can also just install two.

Can anyone recommend a DVB card that they know works reliably with
hardy heron (ubuntu 8.04) and/or the 2.6.24 kernel, something that's
available now down at PC World or on amazon.co.uk?

technisat airstar2 pci is perfect. It has a single (and dvb only) 
tuner  with a coaxial pass-through

no, airstar is for dvb-t, skystar is for dvb-s

I'm running a Nova T500 here on Debian 2.6.24-1-686 with very few problems - 4 
disconnects 2 weeks ago shortly after install but fine since.

I'm just inside the M25 near St Albans pointed at Crystal Palace.

I was using an Igor device for many years but it always seemed too much 
trouble to install after an upgrade so I've been using mceusb2 for a long 
time with no problems.

A standard Nova T worked fine for me for many years and there are a few on 
ebay ATM.

Wonderful, that's good to here. My MCE remote is in the post.

A standard, meaning an earlier version (not the 500)?

Sounds like I shouldn't be scared of the T-500 unless I'm running  
2.6.24. I will order one and see how it goes.

I think the issue with this one, if I understand the reviews
correctly, is that it lacks any on-board amplifier. Given that the
Nova-T 500 is already receiving a much weaker signal than I get with a
standard freeview box (is that a driver issue?), I think this could be
a problem.

I'm getting the impression that there aren't a whole lot of choices
out there for DVB-T. I suppose I could also just use an older version
of the Linux kernel, but unlike others here, the Nova-T 500 wasn't
working very reliably for me under Ubuntu 7.10 either. It worked for
maybe a day. I had a cron task to reboot the machine in the middle of
the night, which was an ugly hack around that problem, and at least it
would record most programs. But the remote wouldn't last longer than a
few hours...

Any other suggestions for a DVB-T card that is known to work on the
current mythbuntu beta?

That's certainly true with my old setup with a 4 year old PCI card which 
required an aerial amp to function at all well - albeit on a standard antenna 
and standard coax drop lead. 

The Nova T500 does provide much better reception here, amp turned down 
considerably and noticeably less glitches and artefacts.

Not ideal :(

Incidentally if Phil Pemberton is reading this, my stable system is using an 
Intel usb chipset.

Same question here -- I was looking for a dual DVB-T card but there  
doesn't seem to be anything available for PCI-e or PCI that will work  
out-of-the-box.

I've been using a TwinHan VisionDTV single tuner PCI card but the  
reception is very poor compared to my set top box.

Any suggestions?
