Hi folks,

I am trying to get my FlyDVB Trio card working with the trial broadcasts
that are currently underway in South Africa (Johannesburg).

I have got the drivers loaded fine, and used "w_scan" as described on
the wiki to generate an initial tuning file (attached). From there I
used "scan" to construct a channels.conf file (also attached).

However, my problem arises is that there do not seem to be any audio or
video PIDs identified. It is possible that the broadcast is encrypted,
since I see many station names operated by MultiChoice (normally DVB-S
with CA).

I did try using dvbtraffic to see which PIDs were generating the most
data, but entering that as the video PID for an arbitrary station was
unsuccessful. Any ideas what I can try further? Unfortunately, our
"Department of Communications" has not been very communicative about
these trials, so I don't have any more information about how these
stations are being transmitted.

Hi Rogan,

your dvbtraffic output raises a question: What happens when you run it for 
several seconds ?

Are the PIDs always the same? Especially the one with the higher bitrate?

I'm asking because if that is the case, it could be that this is a DVB-H 
transmission.

I have some tools (which I did not commit yet) which "scan", in a very 
basic way, for DVB-H services, maybe this could help you.

Before that you can try to use dvbsnoop on PID 0x00 and 0x10 to see 
whether it signals a INT-section.

I could also be a pure radio transmission, but in that case scan should 
detect those channels.

Hi Patrick,

Actually, I think you may well be right. Our cell networks are trialling 
(or even deploying) DVB-H, and the content is provided by MultiChoice. 
Unfortunately (for me) that content is almost definitely encrypted.

I guess I might have to retry w_scan to see if it picks up any other 
frequencies that might have the real DVB-T signals on them. And maybe 
improve my antennae - I am currently using a Technisat DigiFlex TT2, 
which is just sitting on my desk.

I am attaching the results of "dvbsnoop -s pidscan", as well as a longer 
capture of dvbtraffic (using "dvbtraffic | tee dvbtraffic.txt", then 
Ctrl-C after 6-7 seconds).

Hi,

I'm now 100% sure that this is a DVB-H transport stream.

the appearing/disappearing TS-PIDs in the dvbtraffic are indicating that 
timeslicing is active.

The dvbsnoop clearly says that there are only MPE-sections which is 
another indicator for that.

I will commit my two little, proof-of-concept-like, tools soon and tell 
you where to find and how to try it.

So I ran w_scan again, with more conservative options, and actualy 
picked up the channels that are being broadcast via DVB-T on 770MHz. In 
case anyone cares:

Unfortunately, VLC jumps all over the place (window resizing, mostly), 
and shows a pretty garbled signal. It is visually recognizable as a TV 
broadcast, though. Eventually, though, VLC just dumps core with a 
segmentation fault.

I guess this is related to a weak/corrupted signal, although the ber 
showing up while running tzap seemed reasonable:

A reasonable BER is 0 and (if the demod-driver is supporting) UNC should 
be 0 as well.

BER is the bit-error-rate, not the bitrate.

Try to open the window or to put the antenna outside, rotate the antenna, 
check the cables and connector, while having femon running and check which 
position is the best.

Ok, so I tried unplugging and replugging the antenna, just to make sure 
that femon would pick up the crudest of changes, before I tried more 
refined ones.

I got the following, but it also crashed my machine :-(
