[linux-dvb] BBC HD on Freesat?

Hi all,

I'm interested in watching BBC HD broadcasts from the new freesat service.
However there seems to be conflicting reports about what hardware this is
possible with.

In particular there is comment here from the freesat people that seems to
imply that they will use some sort access restrictions:

"would like to clarify that the Hauppauge free-to-air USB2 satellite tuner
is not a freesat licensed product and as such will not receive freesat

So...

1) does anyone know if the freesat broadcasts are encrypted or real free
to air?

2) Is anyone successfully watching freesat including the BBC HD broadcasts
under linux?

3) And if so what hardware are you using?

(I'm particularly interested in USB attached hardware as I have no room in
my media centre case for a tuner card :D, but maybe I will have to buy a
new case!)

Doesn't sound like it needs a CAM, it's prob more about DVB-S2 vs DVB-S.

I've read about this a few days ago and, what I remember is it doesn't 
need a CAM. They made it like this so everyone in great-brittain could 
receive the BBC without a subscription. They didn't mind about it being 
received in other countries because the footprint of the satellite is so 
small.

However, I have read that you will only be able to get the digital 
tv-guide by using a freesat-licensed product, I believe that's what they 
mean when they talk about "freesat services"

I am receiving BBC HD and all other Freesat channels free-to-air over 
Astra 28.2°.

It is running here under Linux with the latest vdr-xine.

I have used a TT-S1500, TT-S2 3200, TT connect S2400 and a TT connect S2 
3600 under Linux. All cards/usb boxes are working fine since BBC HD is 
not being broadcasted as DVB-S2. So the TT connect S2400 or the Pinnacle 
400e should do fine if you do not intend to go for DVB-S2.

My CPU is a bit too slow to decrypt it "fluently" under Linux. Under 
Windows the image is crystal clear, since the GFX card is doing the 
h.264 decoding.

Same here - they are FTA.  Have been receiving them for ages (before the 
lauch of Freesat). The only thing that "new" is that Channel 4, E4 and 
More4 are no longer encrypted.  They are supposed to have EPG data, but 
I've not tried to get that yet.   Also Five is supposed to be following 
later this year moving from encrypted to FTA.

Works here using latest MythTv on linux.

I've got an HVR-3000 - bit of a pain to setup, and I'm only using the 
DVB-S part of it.  I've got an AMD 4200 x2 dual core and that plays BBC 
HD fine.  There are loads of posts about hardware requirements on the 
Mythtv-users list.

Yes, they are the same FTA channels.  BBC HD has been there for some
time too.  Only new things are C4, E4, More4 and some +1 channels - I'm
not sure if they have "moved" or just had encryption turned off.

They have become FTA moving from FTV and the requirement of the Sky CAM

Film4 was first followed by E4 and More4 with Channel4 still
"experimental" this weekend - i.e. hidden behind a non descriptif
number.

My hardware does not permit HD but it was there quite a while ago,
before Film4.

[linux-dvb] BBC HD on Freesat?

Try this using VLC:

vlc dvb:// :dvb-adapter=<YOUR_CARD_NO> :dvb-frequency=10847000 :dvb- 
srate=22000000 :programs=6940

You might have to select the program manually but this should setup  
the tuner ok for you. It is on a DVB-S transponder, not DVB-S2, so any  
budget hardware should be fine.

I overclock my 2GHz AMD64 X2 to 2.4GHz to watch it smoothly, also try  
selecting "Bob" as the de-interlacing option to avoid the jagged edges  
when the camera pans.

I've not managed to get VLC to play ITV HD yet as it is a non-standard  
broadcast, but it is displayed using DVBViewer under Windows if you  
adjust some of the settings for the channel (force it to H.264, mainly).

The only "special" thing about Freesat is the EPG and interactive  
services. All the channels (except ITV HD) can be viewed using any FTA  
receiver. Some have found ways to get some FTA HD receivers to display  
ITV HD, see some of the threads at Digital Spy.

hmm, what is interesting on BBC HD currently, that you can't get
anywhere else as well? EPG sucks on all DVB-S stuff.

But which content is new there?

I assume nothing for now. I doubt anything is worth to move the dish for
it.

Great!

This is what I was looking for and did not find anywhere else in Europe.

Good old BBC, we are in the footprint and for the first time I can see a
reason to spend some money, since we have already a cable-tv
subscription and DVB-T.
