[linux-dvb] DVB-T USB Device which doesn't require non-free software

I run the fully free OS gNewSense, which basically is Ubuntu 8.04 with all the non-free stuff removed.

Could anyone recommend a DVB-T (or hybrid DVB-T/Analog) USB device which would work in this environment without requiring non-free drivers or firmware?

I am not aware that there are any devices available which support as
many videostandards as those devices which use firmware.
As for em28xx based devices there have been a couple of
em2870-zl10353-mt2060 based devices around.
Whatever devices you'll use with xc3028, xc3028L, xc4000, xc5000
they'll require a firmware esp. because those silicon tuners require
special firmware/codes for the different modes. Same counts for many
Micronas designs.

I can recommend the Terratec Hybrid XS FM which is fully supported,
you can get them for a good price on Ebay what I saw yesterday when
looking at all their prices.

Just to clarify I have two questions:

1) If I understand you correctly the Terratec Hybrid XS FM should work without any non-free drivers and firmware. Is this the case? 

2) Is this the mentioned device:  http://www.terratec.net/en/products/Cinergy_Hybrid_T_USB_XS_FM_2012.html ?

Sorry for asking, but I know close to nothing about DVB devices, and want to be sure before buying a device.

yes, there's also a big community around it already applications are
also modified in order to support those devices as good/easy as
possible.

the firmware is included in the available driver (so you won't have to
bother about where to find the firmware or where to parse it from).
The device itself also additionally to the tuner has a small firmware
for the Empia chip.

Markus I suspect what you are suggesting is not what Alex is looking for.

Alex is concerned about which licenses these drivers and firmwares are released
under. He is using gNewSense so he clearly cares that they are free as in free beer *and* free
as in free speech. You say there are two pieces of firmware. Could you clarify (1) which
files you are talking about, (2) who holds the copyrights and (3) whether the driver 
and firmware source codes are available and under what licenses.

Binaries coded in ascii are still binaries.

oh didn't notice that it's a fundamentalistic question, best is to
grab some old hardware and take care that no eeprom is on the device
which might store the same as what is stored in the driver nowadays.
Many chips have internal firmware nowadays, might be hard to pick
something which is purely build in hardware without any blobs :-)
(I won't continue such a discussion).

Right, this device works without firmware loading, I confirm.
This is a good choice for a DVB-T only tuner.
