Hi,

I get the source from http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb repository and I am now
at version 12564:6f58a5d8c7c6. When I try to build the human readable version
of the V4L2 specification I get some error message:

I am running Debian 5.0 with docbook-utils package version 0.6.14-1.1.
Any idea how to fix this?

It appears you are missing one or more of the packages involved in the
sgml catalog for docbook. My first guess would be the sgml-common
package; my second guess would be docbook-dtds. After that, it gets
more complicated - can you confirm you have those two and still have
the problem?

Hmm.. maybe Debian docbook packages have some issues with old versions of DocBook?
Anyway, we should upgrade to XML 4.1.2 to use the same DocBook version as used on kernel.
Also, as kernel uses xmlto, I'm working on a patch to port it to the same version/tools
used on kernel. This will make easier for a future integration of the documentation at the
kernel tree.

As promised, I just committed a changeset that upgraded the DocBook version. It
will now prefer to use xmlto, since, on my tests, it seemed more reliable than
docbook, for html targets. Unfortunately, it didn't work fine for pdf target,
so, it will keep using docbook (in fact db2pdf) for generating the pdf version.

Please test. It everything is fine, IMO, we should consider the inclusion of
the V4L2 API on kernel (or at least, some parts of the API - since the
"changes" chapter doesn't seem much relevant to be on kernel).

Cheers,
Mauro

Hi Mauro,

I did a quick test of the html output and it seems that table handling is
hit and miss: e.g. see section 1.9.5.1. In other cases there is very little
space between columns, e.g. section 3.5, table 3.3.

Regarding pdf: do we really want to keep that? The output never looked good.
I wouldn't shed a tear if we dropped pdf support.

I would also suggest to either remove the revision and changes sections or
move it to a ChangeLog file instead. Now that we have the spec under revision
control I do not see much benefit. The only reason why we still need something
like that is that it provides a log of when certain functionality first
appeared. A ChangeLog would do just as well.

Regards,

	Hans

Can't we fix it to make it look good instead ? :-)

I suspect that that is quite difficult: the core problem are some very
wide tables that are cut off on the right hand side if I am not mistaken.

Of course, if someone wants to take this on...

IMHO, the spanspec is bad specified on this table. See if this would produce a
better result:

Maybe it is not properly handling the colwidth. We need to do more investigation.

This DocBook version is less tolerant to standard violations. I had to fix
several violations that V3.1 didn't complain during the conversion. Maybe there
are some violations at the way some tables are specified, or maybe xmlto
doesn't care to colwidth or handles it differently.

There are also some pictures that are cut.

> Of course, if someone wants to take this on...

It will be good if someone could fix it. I had to keep the old docbook2pdf to
generate pdf's since xmlto refuses to do it, mostly due to the size violations.

Unfortunately the sgml-common and the docbook-dtds are not installed and
I cannot install them on Debian because they are not found:
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=sgml-common&searchon=names&suite=stable&section=all

In the meantime I updated to version "12614:fd679bbd8bb3" and now I get
a different error message:

Try to replace "Role" to "role". Maybe it is just another case where you need to use lowercase with some xml engines.

Ok, I just added a patch that does this to remote_controllers.sgml:

Thanks, now the "make v4l2-spec" successfully build the html documentation
on my computer.

Is it possible to create a link on the linuxtv.org website to the latest dvb and
v4l spec in pdf?
For dvb the v3 is still on the documentation page.

The pdf version of V4L2 spec is currently broken: several tables and graphics
don't fit at the page size. If you (or someone else) is interested on fixing
it, I'll add a pointer at linuxtv.org for the updated version, and improve the
script to auto-generate it.

In the case of the DVB spec, the version of the current document is version 3.
Patrick's ISDB-T patch series are increasing version to 5.1, but there are
still some missing parts when comparing with the current API.

In order to make easier for people to maintain the DVB API and to allow people
of just using just one language and document generation tools, I've converted the
DVB API specs to DocBook as well. I'll add it to the tree soon. It is yet a
work undergoing, but it would be nice if people could review it and improve.
After having some review and porting the ISDB-T changes to it, IMO, the better
is to deprecate the LaTex version using the DocBooc version one instead.

Cheers,
Mauro

I've updated the Documentation page at linuxtv.org to warn people to not trust
at V4L2 spec pdf file, while nobody fixes it. I also added there a link to the
dvbapi spec generated via the newly DocBook port of the docs that I posted at:
	http://linuxtv.org/hg/~mchehab/dvb-specs

This way, it will be easier for people to double check if nothing were lost
during the format conversion. IMHO, one of the biggest advantage of the html
generated from DocBook is that the chapter/section numbering is preserved,
while, with the LaTex version, they are shown only at the pdf doc. It should be
noticed that, as no styles are applied to the tables, that they are not
nicely displayed at the DocBook version.

Cheers,
Mauro

We've got too many entry points/links to things -- which lends itself to
becoming a maintenance nightmare (not blaming anyone, just pointing out
the obvious). For example: although the updated info was applied here:
http://www.linuxtv.org/docs.php, we have other avenues such as
http://www.linuxtv.org/downloads/video4linux/API/V4L2_API/ (as linked
to by, for example, from here
:http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Development:_Video4Linux_APIs)
that do not reflect those changes, and hence we have inconsistent info
across the board.

Same goes with mailing lists and #irc channels -- we've got too many of
them! ... /trails off mumbling about this and that....mumble mumble
mumble grumble....

In fact, docs.php currently points to the downloads page. Also, this is updated
daily via script. I intend to run the same proccess also for the new DocBook
DVB API spec. Anyway, i agree that we should have a consistent place for
storing the docs.
