Hi List

I'm having lots of problems with my PCTV Nanostick 290e under MythTV. Is
this the best place to report these problems?

I'm happy to provide whatever detail is needed, but in summary:

 - every day or two, I get the error messages logged below. I need to
reboot the back end to clear them.

 - when the back end comes back up, 'lsusb' doesn't show the 290e. I have
to unplug it, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in again

This is extremely frustrating. When it works, it's great; when it doesn't,
recordings fail.

The following errors are reported repeatedly:

Mar 9 10:02:03 woodlands kernel: [ 6006.157991] cxd2820r: i2c wr failed
ret:-110 reg:85 len:1
Mar 9 10:02:05 woodlands kernel: [ 6008.511994] cxd2820r: i2c wr failed
ret:-110 reg:00 len:1
Mar 9 10:02:08 woodlands kernel: [ 6011.208909] cxd2820r: i2c wr failed
ret:-110 reg:85 len:1
Mar 9 10:02:10 woodlands kernel: [ 6013.566440] cxd2820r: i2c wr failed
ret:-110 reg:00 len:1

MythTV backend details:
 - Debian v6.0.4 ("Squeeze")
 - Debian multimedia repository
 - Myth version 0.24.2-0.0squeeze1 (as packaged by repository)
 - Kernel: 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem (I've also tried 3.2.0-0.bpo.1-686-pae,
   both Debian-packaged)
 - Tuners: 2 x Hauppauge Nova-T Stick (USB) and 1 x PCTV Nanostick 290e
   (also USB)
 - no module load parameters specified
 - tuning delay 750mS for each tuner
 - drivers for the 290e built using the media_build scripts
   (http://git.linuxtv.org/media_build.git)

Many thanks,
Keith

I posted the message below last week, but I've had no response.

Is this the wrong list? Did I do something wrong in my posting?

I would like fix this problem, and I have more information now, but I
don't want to clutter this list if it's the wrong place.

Guidance as to what I should do gratefully received: thanks.

I have no idea. IIRC this is first time I see that kind of bug report.
Seems like EM28174 starts failing I2C messages. -110 is ETIMEDOUT and is
likely coming from the USB-stack.

Is there anyone have seen similar situations when em28xx driver is used?

Maybe overheat?

regards
Antti

FWIW,
I haven't tested my nanoStick T2 (model 290e) with anything else than
Kaffeine, but it has been running for many days, and I haven't seen
the problem you describe.
I'm using Xubuntu 11.10:
tingo@kg-f4:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:	Ubuntu
Description:	Ubuntu 11.10
Release:	11.10

and media drivers (from http://git.linuxtv.org/media_build.git) built

Just another 290e user here, but I also think this could be a usb issue.

My 290e is on an old PC, so I had to buy a usb2 card for it. The first
one I bought was useless - really bad and I have lots of errors like
that logged over the couple of days before I got a different make.

I have none since. I doubt yours is quite as obviously broken as mine
was (I could tune, but vid was full of errors, though it did play).

One test which may show up that your USB is the problem is to put a gig
file on a usb stick and repeatedly md5sum it. To avoid reading disk
cache from ram rather than from stick you need to umount then mount
between runs (maybe echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches would also work -
you can judge by how long it takes). Mine would never give the same sum
twice - I doubt yours will be that bad.

I have two 290e's - one for dvb-c and one for dvb-t - on the same computer
running F16, Kaffeine and latest media files
and I see lots of lines in /var/log/messages like this

cxd2820r: i2c wr failed ret:-110 reg:db len:1

and fewer like this

tda18271_write_regs: [16-0060|M] ERROR: idx = 0x3, len = 1,
i2c_transfer returned: -110

but strangely none today.
But despite that then I haven't noticed any problems and in particular that of
yours of lsusb not showing your 290e.

lsusb on my computer shows the 290e's as
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 2013:024f Unknown (Pinnacle?)
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 2013:024f Unknown (Pinnacle?)

However, not long ago I reported a conflict with the 290e and USB a mem stick
http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-media@vger.kernel.org/msg42499.html
which leads me to think that for what it is worth as a test you may want to try
with only 1 USB attached namely only the 290e

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll investigate further.

One other oddity I noticed: the last time the i2c errors were logged,
rather than immediately rebooting I unplugged the 290e. There is a blue
LED on the 290e, which of course went out when it was unplugged. However,
it didn't come back on when I plugged it back in. I had to reboot to get
it to show again.

Both of my other tuners are USB tuners, so I don't think this is a USB
problem (I have no problems with them). However, I'll try the USB MD5 test
and report back.

Thanks,
Keith

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I missed a bit from that -
maybe this would be safer -
