Hi all,
i've recently bought an AF9015 usb module from ebay, and am struggling
to get it working correctly. i've been recommended to post here on the
mythtv MailingList.
i'm running mytbuntu 11.04 x64, and the mythbackend service shows
af9013: I2C read failed reg:d607
af9015: command failed:1
and will refuse to establish a lock. so far i've only been able to
find a temporary fix to this by re-inserting the USB stick (ie: it has
to loose power on the USB stick)
i've been googling a fair bit, and i've only found somewhat old info
reguarding (firmware?) source code that is no longer available (it has
been merged into another codeset), and thus the patch file is not
applicable to it....
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9712937&postcount=126 is what
i'm working from.
i am confident the device does work as if i test it immediately after
being re-inserted i get both tuners working fine. after a while though
i start seeing the above errors in the mythtv logs, and i am no longer
able to tune into channels.
just to be clear, i am sure the issue is down to a firmware/driver
issue, and not a config or a problem is yet to be discovered as the
last few nights of googling does show this as an issue on certain
devices.
how do i get this issue sorted?
thanks for any help!

Hello Tim, Malcolm is working on a patch and it is working, maybe it
is not finished but I am using it on MythTV.
I can send it, but I prefer to wait a reply from Malcolm, he is great!
Best regards.

I concur. I have been using Malcolm Priestly's patches with both my
AF9015 dual tuner cards (which are PCI but still look like USB to the
kernel) for a few weeks now and have (finally!) got consistently
perfect recordings in MythTV simultaneously with both tuners on a
card. Malcolm, when do you think you'll submit these patches to the
tree for inclusion? Is there anything else to test?
I agree about the power cycling. Every time I reboot I disconnect the
AC supply for 20secs to be sure the cards are power cycled properly -
you do the same thing by pulling out the stick.

Yes, this is what is holding up the patches to media_build.
The bug appears to be a race condition that appears in get config with
some usb controllers.
Josu, your patch is for the older hg version on s2, so this will not
work on media_build.
I have being trying to a way to do it without the bus lock, but can't
I will try and finish the patches tomorrow.

thanks for the quick responses guys! i look forward to the update.
since i'm new to this mailing list, and have only used v4l in
pre-configured linux distro's, how will this fix be distributed to
people - as a patch i presume?
are there any how-to's with prerequisites of whats required to apply a patch?

Quite easy, in fact.
Once the patch gets into the v4l trunk:

Hello Tim, I am not expert on this. I use to install this way:
apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` build-essential
mkdir /usr/local/src/dvb
cd /usr/local/src/dvb
wget http://mercurial.intuxication.org/hg/s2-liplianin/archive/tip.zip
unzip s2-liplianin-0b7d3cc65161.zip
cd s2-liplianin-0b7d3cc65161
cp /home/lazkano/Dropbox/repository/dvb/af9015_v3.patch.tar.gz .
tar xvzf af9015_v3.patch.tar.gz
patch -p1 < af9015_v3.patch
make CONFIG_DVB_FIREDTV:=n
make install
With this method, I get working the Kworld dual DVB-T and Tevii S660 DVB-S2.
Malcolm, thanks for your work, with this patches you will make useful
3 DVB-T devices I have.
Regards.

thanks for the help all - the recent patch ('[PATCH 0/7] af9015 dual
tuner and othe fixes from my builds') was applied yesterday (or so i
believe!), and so far it's been perfect! before, the patch, the tuner
would become un-usable after a short timeframe (30-60mins).
i both fixed my issue, and learnt a bit about patching, so that was a
good day :)
fwiw, i used Malcolms' suggestion that he sent me off this ML, which
is as follows:
here is how to patch Ubuntu 11.04
----------------------------------------------------------------
To patch and update check you have the following installed using
terminal.
sudo apt-get install git
sudo apt-get install patchutils
sudo apt-get install libdigest-sha1-perl
sudo apt-get install libproc-processtable-perl
find a suitable location in your home directory and run the following
commands.
git clone git://linuxtv.org/media_build.git
cd media_build
./build
Now put the 0000.patch in the media_build directory and run the
following command.
patch -d linux -p1 < 0000.patch
make
sudo make install
then reboot

ok, looks like the patch has fixed the issue in my initial response,
but now i've got a new issue (related?) when i reboot - the
dvb-usb-af9015 module is not being loaded.
if i try to modprobe it (sudo modprobe dvb-usb-af9015), then i get the error:
FATAL: Error inserting dvb_usb_af9015
(/lib/modules/2.6.38-12-generic/kernel/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb/dvb-usb-af9015.ko):
Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
dmesg |tail:
[ 170.406969] dvb_usb_af9015: Unknown parameter `adapter'
thats the only 2 lines related to the issue.
what i did was apply the patch that Malcolm sent to me, and then
rebooted. af9015 still not working, so removed USB device and
reinserted. tuner now worked flawlessly.
gave the PC a reboot, and now i've got the above error.
any ideas?

Are you sure that your system hasn't rolled to 2.6.38-13-generic
yesterday or today even?
In terminal
uname -r

still on 2.6.38-12-generic. i've ensured auto-updates are disabled so
it should be in the same state as it when it was working.
worth re-applying the update/patch? i presume i just need to make &&
make install again...?

done, no change.
i've also one the distclean, wiped the v4l git clone, and re-obtained
it, following the instructions you gave to me the other day.
i can confirm that i've done make, and then sudo make install, rather
than sudo the entire process.
also, i've done this without the tuner stick inserted (no tuner cards
present) and i'm still getting the issue.

i presume you mean ls -l, as ln is for symbolic links :)
if so, the dvb-usb-af9015.ko file size is different - 55k in v4l, and
590k in modules directory. timestamps are the same though. many other
files show similar results - filesize is different, but timestamps
seem to be ok.

i agree, it is a little weird.
also, sorry for emailing you directly Malcolm, my gmail doesn't seem
to like this ML and is doing some weird things when replying.
thanks again.

ohhh, what an idiot i am. it's a user error, in the form of a typo!
because i have multiple tuners, and there is a race condition for
adapter number assignment when the server gets rebooted, i've had to
create a file in /etc/modprobe.d/ to define adapters.
incorrect: 'options dvb_usb_af9015 adapter nr=0,1'
correct: 'options dvb_usb_af9015 adapter_nr=0,1' (note the underscore
between 'adapter' and 'nr')
completely forgot i had configured that!
so, back to a working state! :)
