I own a Skystar USB HD which I use with vdr. Ever since I bought the card I have been having some strange issues with 11817V on Astra 23.5E. Femon reports that there is a lock and sound comes but the image is completely garbled. The same setup (Kernel: 3.3.8, VDR: 1.7.27) works fine with an HVR-4000. So I started to suspect that there might be something wrong with the driver. Trying to find out some more information I came across this forum:

I tried the patch which is supposed to (among other things) make the tuner lock on high bitrate transponders (>60Mbps). But it did not help.
So using the stock driver I gave dvbsnoop a whirl to see if there was something amiss.

The only difference is in the code rate: 3/4 v 5/6. I also tried some DVB-S qpsk 5/6 transponders but none of them had such a high bitrate. So it seems to me that either my hardware is faulty or the combination of 8psk, fec 5/6 (and possibly the high bitrate) is triggering some bug in the driver.
I hope someone more knowledgeable could chime in and shed more light.

Hi,
Since 20 Nov transponders 12051V and 12207V on the same satellite Astra 3B were switched to fec=5/6 and they also became unwatchable. Before the change they were 8psk, fec=3/4. Now they are 8psk, fec=5/6.

I dug out my old Technotrend S2-3200 and gave it a go. Same transponders, same problem. Other transponders, which are OK with Skystar USB HD, are also OK with s2-3200. I wonder if these cards share some common code, or maybe some common driver bug. I will repeat that HVR-4000 has no problem with the same setup. Also I have noticed that under bad weather the picture seems to be somewhat less garbled. It is a cloudy day here and by some freak chance I was able to get perfect picture on a single occasion with the technotrend card. Maybe, and this just an uneducated :) guess, signal strength and quality are too high, off the chart, for s2-3220 and ss usb hd to gain proper lock. HVR-4000 registers ~100% signal and snr. Unfortunately my antenna is on the roof of the building and I can't reduce signal by moving it.

This is an update. I tried reducing the signal by extending he cable and inserting some f-couplers but that failed miserably. However I checked the bitrates on the newly changed transponders. There seems to be a marked difference which can be seen here:

Before the change to fec=5/6 the total bitrate of 12207V and 12051V was below 60Mbps. Now it is over 65Mbps. According to the spec for Technotrend S2-3200 (http://www.tt-downloads.de/update/engl/techspec_tt-budget_s2-3200_en.pdf) 60Mbps is the limit for DVB-S. For DVB-S2 it is stated that the card supports bitrates of up to 90Mbps. Unfortunately I was unable to find similar info for Technisat USB HD. So my next guess is that the linux driver implementation somehow precludes the support of bitrates above 90Mbps for DVB-S2, which are technically possible nonetheless. I was able to accidentally get proper lock on these transponders a couple of times but it is very hard to reproduce.
