Hello,
according to www.dvb.org: DVB-T2 standard was released.
I want to ask there: is S2API ready for this standard? Or it needs some relative big chagnes?
Best regards Tomas

S2API currently doesn't support DVB-T2. However, it were designed in a way that
it should be easy to extend to support any standard.
Cheers,
Mauro

I'm wondering where is dvb-t2 broadcasting ? is it in h264 ?

The BBC are currently running the first proper live tests of DVB-T2 from a real transmitter
(using BBC designed modulators and demodulators) in Guildford.
It is carrying 3x11Mbs H.264 1080/50i HD video streams (using a new Thompson encoder -
and delivering higher quality video than the 16.5Mbs BBC HD on DSat...)
in a 36Mbs DVB-T2 mux (32k carriers and 256QAM rather than 2k/8k carriers and 16/64QAM as
used by DVB-T)
"
its clear we need DVB-T2 ASAP or we in the UK cant see this T2 when
it soon moves off the limited Guildford transmitter and on to the
UK winterhill /NW transmitters later this year.

The payload of DVB-T2 is -- at least from the perspective of
linux-dvb -- completely independent. While Auntie is sending
H.264 in their tests, there is nothing to prevent other types
of payloads to be used with the better modulation ...
Of particular interest is that DVB-T2 allows use of a 1,7MHz
bandwidth channel, which happens to coincide with that of
DAB+ / DAB as currently in use, but with potentially a
greater bitrate (more stations, or possibly better quality
for those suffering from economy pressure) -- possibly making
those who have just binned their DAB boxen in favour of DAB+
once again having to throw their antiquated technology to
the wolves. Or something.
> its clear we need DVB-T2 ASAP or we in the UK cant see this T2 when
Agreed, but one also needs hardware capable of the exended QAM
and whatnot compared with existing DVB-T (also today existing
with H.264). 'Twould be nice if the underlying support for the
extended modulation techniques were already present ahead of
widespread hardware availability, but often it takes months
after 'Doze supported hardware is available for Linux to be
able to support that hardware.

Sorry, but don't you mean next year (2009) about this time?
That's what I've read for the start of the DVB-T2 mux --
though I've also recently read that the Beeb is intending
to start DVB-T2 ahead of the scheduled DSO in selected
larger towns, thereby making DVB-T2 more widespread earlier
than originally planned, and thus driving up demand for
hardware capable of receiving these broadcasts that will be
widespread in a bit more than a few years...
An' givin' ye sprites the boot up the a*se ye need ta get
DVB-T2 support right 'n' proper, innit?

Adding support to the API is only part of the job. The question is which
currently available receiver hardware is supporting DVB-T2 and where can
we get a driver for this hardware?
Don't get me wrong, surely we can add support for a standard without
having any hardware or drivers available. But it would be much more
interesting with ;) .
best regards,
Patrick.

Apparently the following were used at a recent demo in Amsterdam:
Tuner chip TDA18211HN, prototype demodulator TDA10055, both from
NXP.
> get a driver for this hardware?
Won't it be that some poor sucker signs away their soul for NDA
access to the specifics of the chips, or is it possible that
the chip manufacturer might deliver already-written drivers
(though looking at the existing TDAxxxxx frontend code, the
former seems most likely, and I don't know how well this one
manufacturer is generally with linux support) ?
Support for the tuner chip above seems to have been attempted
about a year ago.
The above chips might make their way into set-top-boxen in
half a year or so; whether they'd also be found eventually
in PC-cards or USB-sticks so soon is hard to say -- but
possibly by the time DVB-T2 starts for real, there may be
some other cards based on other chipsets presently on the
drawing board as well.
And speaking of chipsets used in available hardware, does
anyone know what might be used in the recently-released
Hauppauge HVR-930C, a USB 2.0 stick with DVB-C as well as
DVB-T support?
thanks,
barry bouwsma

The TDA18211HN is fully supported by the tda18271 module. The driver
will not need anything specific to tune into new broadcast standards
-- just the filters need to be set up properly.
All of the differences in setup are exposed by the driver in the
attach-time configuration structure, so the driver would not need any
modification to work properly with new demodulator hardware, other
than some tweaking in the attach-time configuration structure
overrides. (without the overrides, the driver will use default
behavior, which is appropriate for some but not all designs).
I do not know of anybody working on a driver for the tda10055.
Regards,
Mike
