Sorry it took me so long to test it and reply. I have good news:
it works now. Thanks a lot.
I had to change the CFLAGS, however, to be able to compile with
gcc-3.3.1. Replacing -mcpu with -mtune in arch/mips/Makefile solved
the problem.
