Try increasing /proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes

can you show some more of the messages? I'm guessing you should
include linux-mm next time (I did this time)

are you running jumbo frames perhaps?

That won't do anything but cause the failure to happen earlier because
GFP_HIGH will be restricted to even less ZONE_NORMAL memory.

This is a duplicate of http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13648
which also only affects e1000.

Stephan, perhaps you can try with a CONFIG_SLUB kernel and enable both
CONFIG_SLUB_DEBUG and CONFIG_SLUB_DEBUG_ON? If that doesn't reveal any
additional information, this sounds like a candidate for kmemleak.

there are no jumbo frames involved in this problem. All we do here is to rsync around a dozen hosts to the box in question.
Btw, there are _three_ e1000e inside this box:

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82572EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 06)
0d:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82573V Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) (rev 03)
0f:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller

I just enabled that, fortunately we can play some with this box ;-)
I will inform you tommorrow what happened.
Thanks, stay tuned.

I added Justin Piszcz to the cc since he was having the same problem as
described in http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13648.

He was unable to get slabtop -o output when this was happening, though, so
maybe you could grab a snapshot of that when you get these failures? It
will help us figure out what cache the slab leak is in (assuming there is
one, >1G of slab on this machine is egregious).

Justin, were you using e1000e in your bug report?

If you have some additional time, it would also be helpful to get a
bisection of when the problem started occurring (it appears to be sometime
between 2.6.29 and 2.6.30).

Yes:

[ 9.302541] e1000e 0000:00:19.0: irq 32 for MSI/MSI-X

I will note with 2.6.30.1 (thus far) it has not re-appeared (yet).

I am pretty sure I can handle that. From the timestamps it looks like it
always happens when large amounts of data come in from rsyncs. These are
cronjobs, so I got the time.
Question: I just checked "slabtop -o" and found out it outputs exactly
nothing, whereas slabtop (without option -o) shows up just like (process) top
with lots of lines. Can you clarify why there is no console output at all with
option -o ?

Do you know what version should definitely be not affected? I can check one
kernel version per day, can you name a list which versions to check out?

Ok, so I just found out that slabtop -o outputs a lot of ANSI code by
redirecting it, that output is merely unreadable. Can some kind soul please
tell the author that formatting ANSI output in -o option makes no sense at
all. top btw does not do this (top -b -n 1).
I will produce your logs, but you will have a hard time reading that trash ...

This is fixed in the latest release of procps[*], so maybe you could
upgrade before generating the output? If not, simply sending
/proc/slabinfo would be better.

To my knowledge, this issue was never reported on 2.6.29, so that should
be a sane starting point.

Perhaps they also fixed this output, starting slabtop from cron:

tcgetattr: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Error opening terminal: unknown.

We had no logs tonight because of this, nevertheless the problem itself is
still there, so we better produce cat /proc/slabinfo as a start ...

After talking to Stephan offline--

I am also using the Intel e1000e for my primary network interface to the
LAN, I suppose this is the culprit? I have both options compiled in e1000
and e1000e as I have Intel 1Gbps PCI nics as well.. I am thinking back now
and before the introduction of e1000e I do not recall seeing any issues,
perhaps this is it?

Justin.

The dmesg output is at the bottom.

Lines of interest(?):
[113178.857208] [<ffffffff8050a0b4>] ? e1000_clean_rx_irq+0x114/0x3a0
[113178.857210] [<ffffffff8050be9b>] ? e1000_clean+0x7b/0x2b0

I spoke too soon, here is the slabtop info, it just happened with
2.6.30.1 (while rsyncing, as usual) -- but in this case, it is during
a migration (I am migrating chunk size on a RAID-6 array) and have the rebuild
priority set to the highest, just FYI:

This output is ~30min late after the problem happened, not sure if that
will be useful?

The rsync was going over an e1000e network connection to a 3ware raid6.

Hello all,

please find attached the messages file from syslog for todays' problem as well
as a /proc/slabinfo for every minute during the problem. I send the info as
tar.bz2 attachment to shorten the post as the files itself are very long ascii
combined.
Feel free to ask further details.

Todays' news is that 2.6.29.4 has exactly the same problem. I was able to
reproduce it. Tonight I will check out 2.6.28.10.

I can reproduce the problem with 2.6.28.10.
Next in line is 2.6.27.26.
In the meantime I do believe that the problem really lies inside the e1000e
driver and not the surrounding kernel code.
Any other driver shows this behaviour in the same environment, escpecially
neither e1000 nor tg3.

It looks like 2.6.27.26 does not show the problem. We will re-check tonight
and keep you informed.

Since we cannot see the problem in 2.6.27.26, we now try 2.6.30.2.

Last result: 2.6.30.2 has the same problem.
Can I help you in any way to solve the issue?
I can check patches or other ideas if needed.
