The guide helped with getting dosemu to start. Thanks. I chose to do the
path to use freedos in synthetic mode since I do not have a dos
partition available.
Now the next issue is the CDROM drive. I have a CD-RW drive but I
typically do not use the ide-scsi module. I use the ide-cd module
instead. So my cdrom appears at /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 (Gentoo 1.4 system).
I placed a symbolic link to the drive in my .dosemu/drives directory:
lrwxr-xr-x 1 storri wheel 10 Jan 14 20:42 d -> /dev/cdrom
The Autoexec.emu and Config.emu mention the cdrom but I did not know
where to place them. Are these files to replace autoexec.bat config.sys
respectively?

I get the following message when I have it setup as you suggested:
bash-2.05b$ ./xdos
ERROR: IMAGE /home/storri/.dosemu/drives/d header lacks magic string -
cannot autosense!

no! You have two alternatives to access the cdrom:
a) device=cdrom.sys (in config.sys)
shsucdx /d:mscd0001 (in autoexec.bat)
shsucdx will tell you the drive letter. Alternatively use mscdex.
b) $HOME/.dosemu/drives/d -> /cdrom
where /cdrom is your CD mount point. In that case you must mount your
CDROM in Linux.
lredir d: linux\fs/cdrom
would do the same (at the DOS prompt or autoexec.bat)
