I think in dosemu-1.0.2.1 you need root rights. Make yourself root and copy dosemu-freedos-bin.tgz to /var/lib/dosemu (I hope that is the right directory for this version). Otherwise look for a log file called boot.log which will show the error messages. In the newer versions you will find this file in $HOME/.dosemu/, I don't know where you find it in dosemu-1.0.2.1.
