I had a similar problem with dd, IIRC what I did
was mkfatimage16 -k32768 -fhdimage -b/dev/hda1
fixed my ~/.dosemurc  to boot $_hdimage=/hdimage

Then, I booted that with dosemu and redirected my
/dev/hda1 (/dosc)  drive to D: with LREDIR and copyed
d: -> c:
